Wells Fargo gives $5,000 to Boyd for outdoor classroom

Wells Fargo presented a $5,000 donation to Boyd Independent School District Wednesday to build a multi-purpose outdoor classroom for middle and intermediate school students.

The outdoor classroom will allow students in grades 4 through 8 to take advantage of the outdoors and nature, while learning lessons in several subject areas. Math, reading, writing, science, and social studies classes could be conducted in the space. They can also be used for outdoor dining and to encourage social engagement at play times.

“At Wells Fargo we are deeply committed to making a positive impact in the communities we serve. We donate to a wide range of nonprofits and schools as a way to help address some of the social, economic, and environmental challenges our communities face,” said Meleia Waschka, district manager for Wells Fargo in Denton. “At the local level, we focus our philanthropic activities on creating long-term, strategic relationships with nonprofits and other organizations to create innovative, sustainable solutions to meet local needs. We couldn’t be prouder to be making an impact right here in Boyd by contributing to this great school district.”

The outdoor classroom will impact nearly 500 students at the two campuses.

“The award of this grant has my students and teachers excited about the new possibilities this grant will provide,” said Assistant Superintendent /Middle School Principal Barbara Stice. “An outdoor classroom will enable our students to connect their academic studies to the real world by allowing them to get out of the traditional classroom and experience science and math content in new ways. Teachers can make plans that include outdoor hands-on learning, where students can make hypothesis, test theories and apply understandings in math and science in a real world setting.”
