Rhome Veterans have partnered with Alvord Area Veterans and the cities of Chico, Alvord and Newark for their second annual coat and blanket drive.

Last year Rhome Veterans collected clothing and toiletries to take to the Veterans Affairs center in Waco. Now they’d like to keep a lot of the donations in Wise County.

“Last year it was a spur of the moment type thing,” Rhome Veterans Commander Deborah BeCraft said. “We didn’t have time to do any research, so we did Waco. We’re getting started a little earlier this year, so we were able to ask a few of the towns to partner with us.”

Items needed include blankets and winter wear – new or gently used coats, gloves, hats, socks and scarves for men, women and children. BeCraft said longjohns are especially needed, along with jeans in sizes 28 or 30. New personal hygiene items – toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, brushes, hand sanitizer, moist wipes, disposable razors, shampoo, conditioner and bar soap – are also needed.

Donations will be collected at the following locations and dates:

  • Newark City Hall, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday, Oct. 16, to Thursday, Oct. 26, on business days
  • Chico City Hall, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday, Oct. 23, to Thursday, Nov. 2, on business days
  • Alvord City Hall or Alvord Building Center, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Monday, Oct. 23, to Friday, Nov. 3, on business days

This year the donations from the drive will be distributed to both veterans and citizens.

“It’s any veteran in need,” BeCraft said. “But since cities are helping us, we want to help citizens. Hopefully we can help a lot of people in need.”

On distribution days, veterans will need to show proof of service. No one will be asked for other personal information.

Distribution dates and times are as follows:

  • Friday, Oct. 27, at Newark City Hall. Veterans only from 10 a.m. to noon, any citizen from noon to 2 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 3, at Chico City Hall. Veterans only from 10 a.m. to noon, any citizen from noon to 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 4, at Alvord City Hall. Veterans only from 10 a.m. to noon, any citizen from noon to 2 p.m.
