United Way of Wise County held its fundraising kickoff luncheon in Decatur Thursday, revealing its 2017-2018 campaign goal of $450,000.

Money raised for United Way benefits 26 local charitable organizations, including Wise Area Relief Mission, CASA of Wise and Jack Counties, Made 2 Thrive and Decatur Cares. The total program budget for 2016-2017 was $430,120, expected to increase for the next year.

“Many of the organizations who request our funds accomplish a great deal,” campaign Chair Terry Everett said. “We give back 100 percent of everything that’s donated – 100 percent.”

Everett said over the past decade, United Way has distributed more than $4.5 million throughout the community. She encouraged those at the luncheon to donate, volunteer or set up fundraisers to benefit United Way.

“Without a happy, healthy, productive family, we’re all in bad trouble,” Everett said. “We need these families to be successful so we can be successful as employers, but you can only get back what you put in.”

Texas State Rep. Pat Fallon spoke about his World Marathon Challenge, where he ran seven marathons on seven continents in seven days in 2016. Fallon ran to raise money for pediatric cancer research in honor of a young boy named Jonny Wade who died of brain cancer in December of 2015. Fallon talked about how many people told him his goal to run seven marathons in seven days was impossible.

“This $450,000 goal is difficult but it is not impossible, and we can achieve it,” Fallon said. “And we can do that if you love thy neighbor.”

Wise County Challenger Charities kicked off the donations by presenting United Way representatives with a check for $25,000. Devon Energy and its employees donated more than $183,000 prior to the luncheon.
