Steagall to take stage at joint luncheon

The Bridgeport and Decatur Chambers of Commerce are having a joint luncheon Friday, featuring cowboy poet Red Steagall.

Steagall has been entertaining for more than 45 years, and in 1991, the Texas legislature named him the Official Cowboy Poet of Texas.

In 1994, Steagall launched a one-hour syndicated radio show, “Cowboy Corner,” which is broadcast in 165 markets in 43 states.

His music has been the winner of eight Wrangler Awards from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and he was inducted into its Hall of Great Westerners in April 2003.

He was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2004 and received the Charles Goodnight Award in December 2006. Also in 2006, Steagall was named Poet Laureate for the state of Texas. He is also a member of the Texas Trail of Fame.

Steagall has written four books – “Ride for the Brand,” “The Fence That Me and Shorty Built,” “Born to This Land” and “Cowboy Corner Conversations.”

He can be seen weekly on his television show, “Somewhere West of Wall Street” on RFD TV, which won the 2016 Wrangler Award for western lifestyle from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

In June 2012, Steagall was presented with the Boss of the Plains Award from the National Ranching and Heritage Center in Lubbock, which recognizes individuals who are highly regarded in their professions and who have provided noteworthy support of the National Ranching Heritage Center.
