Genealogical society announces 2017-18 programs

The Wise County Genealogical Society has planned its programs for 2017-18.

It meets monthly at the Decatur Public Library, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

They are as follows:

  • Sept. 21 – Kelvin Meyer will present The Sanctified Sisters of the Women’s Commonwealth of Texas. Meyer is a forensic genealogist, and he will talk about a commune of Texas women who created a life together without their husbands and sometimes their children.
  • Oct. 19 – Jeanette Hurst will present Family Search – Easy Searching. Hurst will make searching out the secrets of Family Search simple and easy.
  • Nov. 16 – Dale Ellison will present Fixing Cemeteries and Finding Ghosts. Ellison is famed for the thousands of hours he has spent repairing neglected cemeteries and will talk about his experiences doing so.
  • Jan. 18 – Program to be announced later.
  • Feb. 15 – Patti Gillespie will present Forgotten Treasures in the Texas Courthouses: Discovering Miscellaneous Books. Gillespie will share three fun Texan stories that have come to life with the information found in the miscellaneous books at the Wise County clerk’s office. She will share a number of examples of assorted documents found in books. Attendees will receive a list of all the Texas counties that hold these forgotten treasures.
  • March 15 – Carla Weber will present The Orphan Train. Weber has been researching the Orphan Train for a number of years. Her husband’s family was part of the Orphan Train.
  • April 19 – Steven L. Moore will present Rise of the Texas Rangers. Moore is the author of “Savage Frontier: Rangers, Riflemen and Indian Wars in Texas.” He will be sharing Texas history with a bit of genealogy.
  • May 17 – There will be a question and answer session and celebration of the organization’s fifth birthday.
