Forum to be held for DACA recipients

With the future of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) uncertain following President Donald Trump’s decision to end the program and leave any replacement in the hands of Congress, Proyecto Inmigrante has partnered with the city of Bridgeport and local Catholic churches to hold a forum discussing options for DACA recipients.

“Our goal in light of the repeal of DACA is to get out accurate information so they know what steps to take to move forward,” Bridgeport City Council member Kevin Lopez said.

The forum will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Bridgeport Community Center, 1102 Lawdwin Avenue. Though a variety of immigration issues may be discussed, DACA will be the main topic of the night.

Currently, DACA recipients whose legal status expires on or before March 5 have only until Oct. 5 to apply to renew their status, making it effective until October 2019. Those who do not get their status renewed could be deported, something Lopez said the forum will discuss. The Consulate General of Mexico will be present to talk about what to expect if deported to Mexico, and Lopez said event organizers hope South American consulates will attend as well.

While Lopez hopes it doesn’t come to deportations, he said there are programs available for those who will have to return to their birth country.

“They will provide resources for them to find housing and jobs and to start their lives,” Lopez said.

Lopez said local Catholic churches estimate there are many DACA recipients in Wise County. Those with DACA status came to America as minors, and for some this is the only country they remember.

“These people are in our community, and those with DACA status are taxpayers just like everyone else,” Lopez said. “It’s my job to help them.”
