As the first starting buzzer sounded at the Fit-N-Wise competition pool Thursday afternoon, it marked a milestone for both the facility and the Decatur High School swim team.

Thursday’s meet was the first ever held at Fit-N-Wise’s new facility and the first home meet for the team. The hospital’s previous aquatics facility wasn’t suitable for meets due to the pool’s depth and lack of space for spectators.

“I think it went really well,” said first-year coach Amy Chabek.

The meet was the first use of the facility’s timing system, which went smoothly for the most part, she said.

For the team, holding the meet at their home pool meant having the advantage of friendly waters.

“They were swimming in the pool they’ve been practicing in,” she said. “I definitely think that gave them an advantage.”

An audience full of supporters also gave the team an added boost, she said.

“I think it was pretty exciting for them because they knew their friends would be able to be there,” she said. “Their parents could come. Decatur and surrounding areas come there. It’s a community fitness center, so I think the word got around we were having a swim meet.

“The whole mezzanine was full of audience members.”
