The Decatur Public Library will have its first book festival this weekend.

The Same Page Book Festival is 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at the library, 1700 FM 51 South. The event will include local authors, opening and closing keynote speakers, sessions for aspiring writers and readers, and an author fair where the public will be able to chat with authors and purchase books.

“We’re excited to have poets, fiction authors and nonfiction authors coming to the Decatur Public Library, giving our festival a variety of styles and genres of both books and speakers,” Library Director Pat Peters said.

The opening keynote speaker will be Charlotte Canion, author of “You Have to Laugh to Keep from Crying: How to Parent Your Parents.” Her nonfiction book, with love and humor, tackles the tough subject of becoming a caretaker for one’s aging parents. Canion has had many different careers and has made a name for herself as a Texas Master Gardener and an enthusiastic public speaker.

After the opening keynote speech, there will be a session for readers and another for writers. This will be followed by a meet-and-greet where authors will display, sell and sign their books.

There will be two more sessions before the day is closed with keynote speaker Julia Heaberlin, author of many best-selling thrillers, including her current title, “The Black-Eyed Susans.” Her fourth novel, “Paper Ghosts,” will be released in April 2018.

Hearberlin grew up in Decatur and was a features editor for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram before publishing her first novel, “Playing Dead” in 2012. She’s no stranger to the Decatur Public Library and has participated in book signing events at the library for each of her novels.
