Wise County commissioners Monday adopted the county budget and tax rate for fiscal year 2018.

The tax rate will remain the same as last year – 37.89 cents per $100 property valuation, which will fund a $64.1 million budget.

Commissioners did not further discuss Sheriff Lane Akin’s Aug. 28 request to raise the county tax rate to, in part, fund a 5-percent raise for sheriff’s office employees.

County Judge J.D. Clark said instead it had been decided to use available sheriff’s office funds to cover a 3 percent raise for S.O. employees “above entry level and below chief deputy.”

This will boost the compensation of employees in enforcement, the jail and dispatch who did not get the $1 per hour raise granted this summer.

Akin said Tuesday afternoon the money from the inmate telephone fund and some transferred from impound will cover the raise.

In other business, commissioners also adopted the college branch campus maintenance tax rate, holding it steady at 4.618 cents per $100 valuation.
