Colonial Hills Christian School closed its doors in May after serving students in the South Atlanta, Ga., area for the last 58 years.

Senior Ryan Shackleford was a member of the school’s final class, and he received the Ben Pounds Memorial Award. This award is based on a character study done by Head Master David Hicks and his teaching staff.

Shackleford was chosen for his outstanding perseverance in achieving his goals. The award was given in memory of Richard Benjamin Pounds who died in an auto accident in 2008.

Pounds was a 1992 graduate of the school. His parents, Larry and Martha Pounds, have given the award for the last three years. There is also a memorial brick for Pounds in the school courtyard. It was presented to the school by his classmates in 2009.

Pounds was the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis F. Pounds of Decatur and the nephew of Bennie and Barbara King of Decatur.

He was the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Loften Richard “Dick” Boyd Jr. of Teague and the son of Martha Boyd Pounds and Larry F. Pounds, both of East Point, Ga.

Pounds’ parents also founded the Richard Benjamin Pounds Memorial Scholarship for Returning Veterans at the University of North Texas. To make a donation, call the UNT Gift Administration, 940-369-8200. All donations are tax deductible and confidential.

Ben served in the Marine Reserves.
