Boyd High School’s recently-formed Hiking Club is planning a service project to build trails around the school’s campus.

The group got together earlier this year after teacher Amanda Mathews discussed taking her science students to Northwest ISD’s outdoor learning center with Boyd Superintendent Ted West.

“I really just wanted to get them outside,” she said. “He said, ‘You don’t need to take them [to Northwest’s facility], just take them out back.'”

The high school’s campus extends into a wooded area where its cross country program runs, she said, which would be perfect for hiking trails if it wasn’t covered in poison ivy.

“We are going to have to wait for that to die down before we can start cutting trail,” she said. “I went out there just to start working on the trail because I was ready to get students out there, but I would’ve had poison ivy up to my eyeballs.”

While the group continues to wait for cooler weather, Mathews said it’s accumulated a massive turnout. Around 150 students signed up at a student organization fair earlier this year.

“I had one sheet that had 30 slots on it for names,” she said. “I had kids manning the table, and we let class by class come in. I checked in on them, and they told me they had to make five copies.

“They keep bombarding me, asking me when we’re going hiking.”

Mathews said the group also has plans to hike trails at Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Mineral Wells State Park, but the club will focus on service, too. The district’s program Profile of a Yellowjacket requires students to complete eight hours of community service each year.

“I told them we’ll be doing a lot of maintenance before we hike,” she said.

The club is open to donations for trail-building tools. To help, email Mathews at amathews@boydisd.net.
