Olan Travis Underwood, 91, of Sanger, died Friday April 14, 2017, in Pilot Point.
Funeral is 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at the Bolivar Baptist Church with Dr. E. L. McNeal officiating. Coker Funeral Home in Sanger is handling arrangements.
Pallbearers are Lance Edgar, Scott Geron, Tyler Edgar, Ralph Amyx, Russell Rhodes and Danny Boynton.
Olan was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Bowie to Oscar E. and Mary Ellen (Hancock) Underwood.
He served his country as a United States Marine during World War II and went on to obtain his bachelor of science degree from Texas Wesleyan University. He married Billie Lambert Feb. 23, 1951, in Levelland. He was a member of the Bolivar Masonic Lodge No. 418 in Sanger.
In 1972, Travis accepted a coaching position at Sanger Independent School District and the following year became the principal at Sanger Elementary, a position he would hold for the next 17 years. He was devoted to the education of the children of Sanger and was a respected administrator. He served as the project representative for the district during the construction of the new high school and Butterfield Elementary.
Olan was preceded in death by his wife; sisters Wanda Rudd, Ruby Cook and Anelle Ballard; brothers Frank Alvin Underwood and Glen Underwood; and granddaughter Stacy Brady.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Woolard of Denton; son Bill Geron of Hurst; sister Nancy De Haven of Hurst; brother Stanley Underwood of Fort Worth; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Karen Hamilton Gunn Memorial Scholarship Endowment in honor of Stacy Brady, granddaughter of Mr. Underwood.
