Irene Sanderson

Irene C. Sanderson, 97, of Newark, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in Decatur.

Funeral was April 14 at Newark Church of Christ in Newark with Mike Boaldin and John Henderson officiating. Burial followed at Aurora Cemetery.

Irene was born May 5, 1919, in Knox County to James and Celestie (Deathrage) Norwood. She married Eugene C. Sanderson Jan. 22, 1938, in Seymour. Irene was a member of the Newark Church of Christ.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Irene was known as Mamaw not only to her own grandchildren, but also to most of the children in Newark. For many years she not only took care of her family, but was also a babysitter for numerous others.

She was always so happy to see family and friends and showed her sweet spirit through her warm and loving smile. While she had a great love for cooking, baking and gardening, her main passion was quilting. Most people that knew her had a quilt handmade for them. Irene loved her family and truly enjoyed having all of them together for holidays, vacations and 42 tournaments.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son James Joe Sanderson; great-grandson Dylan Joseph Blair; sister Leona Jones; brothers Sammy, Roy, Alvin, Elmer, Earl Owen, Carl and Joe Bob Norwood.

Irene is survived by her sons, Virgle Sanderson of Newark, Clinton Sanderson and wife, Mollie, of Boyd, Gerald Sanderson and wife, Jodi, of Springtown, Ronald Sanderson and wife, Sharon, of Granbury and Mike Sanderson and wife, Sharon, of Haslet; and daughters Billie Burkett and husband, Billy, of Jacksboro and Becky Bricker and husband, Joey, of Poolville.

She’s also survived by daughter-in-law Joann Sanderson of Graham; 18 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; sisters Neoma Henderson of Burleson, Lillie Etta Webb of Bennington, Okla., and Lois Riggs of Monroe, Okla.; sister-in-law Wanda Norwood of Bridgeport; brother Billie Norwood and wife, Willie, of Graham; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
