Edna Abernathy, 86, of Decatur, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, in Decatur.

Memorial service is 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Oaklawn Cemetery with Phillip Whitner officiating.

Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

Edna was born May 27, 1931, in Erick, Okla., to William and Molly (Elms) Brown. She married William “Bill” Abernathy. She graduated college and earned her bachelor’s degree in social work.

Edna retired form Child Protective Services after many years. She also worked as a substitute teacher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her infant son; seven sisters; and two brothers.

Edna is survived by her daughter, Nancy Chenoweth and husband, Mark, of Decatur; son William Abernathy and wife, Deborah, of Burden, Kan.; grandchildren Jenny Branton, Katy Chenoweth, Stacey Higdon and husband, Daniel, William L. Abernathy and wife, Chasity and Desiree Abernathy; great-grandchildren Kendyl Higdon, Morrigan Branton, William Barrett Abernathy and Harper Higdon; sisters Bernice Baker and Florence Boggs; and other family members and friends.
