Brett Alden Bethurum

Brett Alden Bethurum, 56, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, in Venus.

Memorial service was Thursday, Oct. 12 at First Baptist Church in Decatur with the Revs. David Lowry and Gerre Joiner officiating.

He was born Oct. 3, 1961, in Arlington. He attended Gunn Junior High School and graduated from Bowie High School in Arlington in 1979. Brett played trumpet for the Bowie Volunteers Marching Band and he received a band scholarship from Texas Christian University.

Brett’s love of music evolved into the acoustic guitar and electric guitar. He played in numerous bands including Country Mile, Not Exactly Dylan and Slim Pickens for more than 25 years. Brett’s constant companions were his dogs Hazel and Tate, plus many others over the years. Brett was full of humor and always had a beautiful smile. Brett enjoyed the outdoors and spending time in his backyard in the evening playing his guitar.

He is survived by his two daughters, Haley Axsom and her husband, Kalo, of Natchitoches, La. and Ellisha Doolen of Tucson, Ariz.; parents Jerry and Barbara Bethurum of Decatur; sisters Lisa A. Bethurum of Decatur and Faith Bethurum of San Marcos; and brother Captain Grant Bethurum and his wife, Maria, of Odenton, Md.

He is also survived by nieces and nephews Rob Holder and his wife, Stephanie, of Keller, Crystal Raesley and her husband, Matt, of Keller, Arin Satterthwaite of Marble Falls, Ian Satterthwaite of San Marcos and Kai S. Bethurum of Odenton, Md; and great-nephew Hayden V. Wofford of Keller.
