Jacey Cate cheered on her older brother Jared as he set passing records on the football field at Boyd.

Monday, she joined him as a school record holder, clearing 5-4 to win the high jump at the Bowie meet.

“I’m proud of my brother and always have looked up to him,” said the Boyd sophomore. “It was my turn to get on the [records] board. When I got the school record, I called him. He was happy for me.”

Cate eclipsed the previous mark of 5-3, which was set by Ginger Gabbert in 1973.

She surpassed her previous best by 2 inches.

“Last year as a freshman, I did 5-2,” she said.

This year, she had yet to hit that mark. Her best of the season before Monday was 5 feet.

“My goal was 5-2. I’ve been working really hard with coach Kate Webb,” Cate said.

Cate sailed over 5-2 and then had a strong effort to get the school record.

“I said ‘Jacey, you can do this’ and said a prayer before I went,” she said. “When I cleared 5-4, I jumped off the mat. The team was there, and we were all excited.”

Boyd coach Cody Vanover said: “It was nice to see all our girls there to celebrate with her.”

He added that Cate could still move the bar up higher.

“There’s still a few things she can tweak to maybe get 2 or 3 inches,” Vanover said.

Cate agrees.

“I feel I can work harder and get 2 more inches,” she said.

Her height of 5-4 won the 3A title last year at the state meet.

“I know 5-4 would give her an opportunity,” Vanover said. “Her form keeps improving, and she’s putting things together.”
