After the Christmas break, Decatur swimmers returned to the pool Saturday with a strong showing at the Cowtown Shootout in Fort Worth.

The Decatur squad took second in the 50-freestyle shootout and pentathlon style meet with 409 points. Fort Worth Paschal edged out Decatur with 411.5 points.

For the 50-freestyle shootout, swimmers competed in the opening heats with the top 16 advancing. There were then rounds of eight, four and two.

Decatur freshman Lizey Rowden took third in the 50-freestyle shootout.

For the pentathlon, swimmers competed in five events – 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley – for a total individual score.

Rowden finished fifth in the pentathlon. Allie Blevins was sixth, Jennifer Morehart seventh and Maddi McCloud 10th.

For the boys, Colton Teter took 10th and Dylan Carter 22nd.

The girls relay squad of Morehart, Blevins, McCloud and Rowden won the 200 freestyle and 200 medley.

Decatur coach Brooklyn Huffman was impressed by the performance.

“Being out of the routine and just getting back, it was good,” Huffman said.

The dual is one of the last two meets for Decatur before the District 6-5A meet Jan. 23 in Grapevine.

Huffman said the next couple of weeks will be focused on fine tuning before district.

“We’ll be working at race pace and working on our starts and turns,” Huffman said. “We’re still able to perfect a few things to cut time off.”
