With four regional medals dangling from around her neck, Decatur’s Allie Blevins wore a smile Monday afternoon.

“Hard work pays off,” Blevins said.

The Decatur junior brought home a silver and three bronzes medals from the 5A Region II swim meet over the weekend at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.

Blevins took second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 as an individual. She teammed with Madelyn McCloud, Jennifer Morehart and Lizzy Rowden to finish third in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

“I’m very happy. This was my best year so far,” Blevins said. “It was real exciting how everyone did. I’m happy for everyone.”

The Decatur girls finished fourth at the regional meet with 170 points. As a program Decatur advanced 21 of its 22 entries into the region final or consolation finals in prelims Friday.

“It was the most we’ve had make it to finals,” said Decatur coach Brooklyn Huffman. “I’m very proud of everyone. It’s the best meet we’ve had. They gave it their all in prelims and finals. We even dropped seconds from prelims.

“For a little 4A school to come in fourth, competing against all the 5A schools, is like going to state.”

In the grueling 500, Blevins kept every 50 split between 29.01 and 34.08. She couldn’t keep up with the blazing pace set by Mansfield Legacy’s Haley Yelle, who won in 4:47.57. Blevins’ 5:29.62 was 11 seconds ahead of Argyle’s Heidi Reuter.

“[Yelle] was very fast. She made it into the Olympic trials,” Blevins said. “We talked afterwards. She’s very sweet.”

Blevins said it wasn’t too hard, swimming the endurance event on back-to-back days along with her 200 and relays.

“Coach’s practices are really hard and pushes us,” Blevins said. “I was happy with my times.”

Blevins missed a state call-up in the event. She needed a 5:08 to qualify for the state meet.

“I wasn’t too disappointed. I was happy that I got the time I wanted,” she said.

In the 200, Blevins finished third in 2:03.82. Yelle won in 1:48.33. Khadijah Brown took second in 2:02.71.

The Decatur quartet turned in a 1:46.44 in the 200 freestyle relay and 3:55.08 in the 400 freestyle relay.

All four members of the relay will return next year.

“I’m very excited about next year,” Blevins said. “I’m going to start training in a few weeks.”
