As a first-year soccer program, the Bridgeport Bulls started the season with modest expectations.

The Bulls shattered those and more, wrapping up the District 3-4A title Friday with a 3-1 victory over Burkburnett.

The Bulls finished district at 6-2 and will enter the playoffs as the league’s top seed and on a five-match winning streak.

“It’s a huge accomplishment,” said Bridgeport coach Ben Parks. “I want to say we exceeded everyone’s expectation, but I don’t think the boys settled on that. Since the first game, they didn’t play like a first-year team. The guys set high expectations and challenged themselves against the best teams.”

The Bulls will find out their bi-district opponent later this week when District 4-4A wraps up the regular season. The Bulls will face the fourth-place team out of the league.

To wrap up the 3-4A crown, Bridgeport had to ward off an early aggressive attack by Burkburnett. The Bulls’ back line of Eric Aguilar, Nick Stauffer and Giovanni Martinez stepped up to the challenge, stopping any advances.

“Burk came out swinging and it took the opening 15 minutes to get into the game,” Parks said. “Once we came to, we were able to funnel a lot of their plays into the middle. Our guys shut the middle down.”

The Bulls’ speed then took over. Alex Martinez hooked up with Uriel Betancourt for a goal in the first half.

Betancourt made it 2-0 after halftime, scoring on a penalty kick.

Martinez added a third goal, blasting a shot in from long distance.

Parks recognized the offensive milestones for the duo.

“[Betancourt] is coming up on the 20-goal mark,” Parks said. “Alex is close to double digits in goals and assists. Both have been involved in 20-plus goals.”

Burkburnett punched in a goal off a corner kick late in the match, but it did little to dampen the night for the Bulls.
