Fighting her putter on the front nine Wednesday, Lexi Read made the turn at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock at 4-over par.

“I had a rough front nine because of my putting; I was playing good,” Read explained.

Over the final 27 holes of the Class 4A Region I tournament, the Bridgeport senior and Midwestern signee played only five over to finish at 152 and bring home third place.

Read also led the Sissies to a third-place team finish and third trip to the University Interscholastic League golf championships in four years.

“I’m pumped we made it. We’re all excited and ready to work hard the next two weeks,” Read said.

Bridgeport shot a 653 as a team with rounds of 320 and 333. The Sissies finished eight strokes ahead of fourth-place Sweetwater.

Andrews’ Black squad took first with a 613 and its Gold team was second with a 646.

“It was exciting. It was great competitive golf the last two days,” said Bridgeport coach Alan Green. “We played with the best in the region and state. Four of the five best in the state were here. Our girls rose up and competed.”

After making the turn Wednesday, Read finished out the first round by adding only one stroke to shoot a 77 that put her tied for fourth.

Thursday, Read took advantage of the par-5 second hole, giving her a shot for eagle.

“I was on the green and my eagle putt lipped out. I putted in for birdie,” Read said. “That got my round going.”

Read finished the front nine at 2-under par. She closed her round at 75, giving her third place.

“I was really proud of Lexi,” Green said. “After going 4-over on the front nine and then playing the next 27 at 5-over was amazing.

“On the front nine [Thursday], she hit about every fairway and green. She made it look easy.”

Brooke Irion turned in a team-best 75 in the first round. She followed it with a strong second-round 78. Her 153 gave her fourth overall.

“I was so proud of Brooke,” Green said. “Golf can be a cruel game. She was not clicking at district. For her to come back and perform the way she did shows the type of person she is.”

Katie Hudson shot a career-best 78 in the opening round. She carded an 88 in the second round to finish with a 166 and tied for 20th.

“She gave us the boost we needed going into the second round,” Green said.

Abbi Hatton fired rounds of 90 and 92. Ashlie Lennard finished at 214 with rounds of 108 and 106.

The Sissies will play in the 4A finals April 25-26 at Onion Creek Club in Austin.

Decatur finished 12th at regionals with an 849. Madeleine Semmelman turned in the best two-day total with a 205. Sarah Crouse shot 207. Autumn Fuller had a 213, Abby Grimes 224 and Corley Blount 229.
