After a downhill putt on No. 2 rolled 8 feet past the hole, Bridgeport senior Lexi Read faced an early test in her round Tuesday.

Read turned the early challenge into a momentum builder for her round, draining the putt for par. She went on to shoot a 76 at Onion Creek Golf Club to finish eighth in Class 4A at the University Interscholastic League championships.

“That really got me going,” Read said about the putt on the par 3 second hole. “My putter had me going. Even if I missed a green, I could putt it in. I played pretty well.”

Read shot a two-day total of 155.

She finished eight strokes back of Andrews’ Libby Walinder and Melissa’s Brooke Nolte at 147. Waunder won the individual title on the second playoff hole.

“[Lexi] is a special kid and golfer,” said Bridgeport coach Alan Green. “She’s one of the special ones.”

Read led the Bridgeport Sissies to a fifth-place finish as a team with 696 in two rounds.

Andrews won the state title with a 623. Lampasas took second with a 672.

Bridgeport started the second round in fourth. Andrews’ second team passed Bridgeport in the second round and took fourth by two strokes.

“Fifth is not bad. We wanted to place for Lexi,” said Bridgeport’s Brooke Irion. “It’s just an honor to make it to state.”

After hitting the big putt on No. 2, Read stayed at even until a bogey on the ninth hole. She went to 2-over on 11 before getting a tap-in birdie at the 12th to move back to 1-over.

Read then ran into some trouble on the finishing holes. She finished with a pair of bogeys, including the par-5 No. 17 after hitting a tree with her fourth shot.

“It was a rough end the last three or four holes,” Read said. “You had to hit the fairway [on this course]. I did that on the second day. At the end I had some unlucky shots.”

Read ran a putt just by the hole on 18 and tapped in for her final high school shot, putting the finishing touches on her 6-over round.

“It was nerve-racking being my last hole,” Read said.

Read finished three strokes better in her second round than her opening 79.

Irion finished with a 167 after rounds 84 and 83.

Irion said her round shaped up after some early trouble off the tee.

“I couldn’t hit my fairway woods or driver. I was finally able to hit something more than a 5-iron,” Irion said.

Katie Hudson shot an 82 Tuesday after an opening round 88 to finish at 170.

“I definitely played a lot better,” Hudson said. “My swing felt good. I was real consistent. There weren’t a lot of misses.”

Abbi Hatton finished with a 204 after rounds of 99 and 105. Ashlie Lennard shot 203 with rounds of 124 and 106.

“It was a true test of golf out there,” Green said. “You got penalized for mistakes. There were some of those that cost us. But to finish top five and for three of the five to shoot better in tougher conditions is impressive.”
