With two of their top runners out for the District 9-2A meet, the Alvord Bulldogs needed someone to take charge.

Colton Parker

Freshman Colton Parker stepped up to the challenge.

Parker ran a season-best 18:14 on the 5K course to win the 9-2A individual title and lead the Bulldogs to the team championship.

“It meant a lot. It showed I could do more than just finish the race,” Parker said. “I’m glad I could step up.”

The winning performance was a surprise for Parker and coach Aaron Tefertiller.

“He’s been gaining the last month,” Tefertiller said. “He ran really well at Lindsay.

“We talked about him having to step up with us missing two guys, and he did.”

Parker got out front at the start of the district race and held off all challengers.

“One kid tried to pass me and I just kept going,” Parker said.

Parker wasn’t the only Bulldog to turn in big performance in what is believed to be the boys cross country program’s first district championship. Clay Stark ran 18:44 for fourth, Cody Putnam 18:53 for fifth, William Martin 19:08 for sixth and Tanner Petree 19:42 for 10th.

“They all did a great job and ran their best times,” Tefertiller said.

The Bulldogs now turn their attention to Saturday’s 2A race at the Region II meet at Grand Prairie’s Lynn Creek Park.

Tefertiller said the Bulldogs could challenge for one of the four state berths.

“They don’t know what they are capable of,” he said. “If we shave some time, we have a shot at fourth. We have to run well.”
