Going into the season with a new coach and replacing their leading scorer, the Slidell Lady Greyhounds still maintained high expectations.

With the early returns, the Lady Greyhounds are surpassing those lofty aspirations.

Slidell blasted last year’s District 21-A co-champions Forestburg 59-38 Tuesday to move to 4-0 in the district and 17-3 overall.

“We want to be undefeated district champions,” said Slidell’s Kylie Franklin. “[Last year] we lost to Forestburg. That’s why we want it really bad.”

In his first season with the Lady Greyhounds, coach Lance Shelton is not surprised by the strong start.

“I felt like we had a good competitive group and that they played well as a team,” Shelton said. “I was unsure being new what the opponents would be like.”

Since arriving, Shelton has preached defense and rebounding to his new squad. The message has gotten across to the Lady Greyhounds.

“In our locker room, it’s painted in big letters: defense and rebounding,” Franklin said. “That’s a big thing for us.”

The work in those two areas has led to strong games on the offensive end.

“We’re getting the rebounds and getting the ball down the floor,” said Kayler Talamantes.

Franklin added: “Good offense starts with good defense.”

In the win over Forestburg, Shelton said all three phases came together. The Lady Greyhounds held a talented Forestburg team to just four first-quarter points. Slidell ran out to a 15-4 lead and led 34-21 at halftime.

“We played good defense and rebounded the ball well,” Shelton said. “You can’t always have a good game offensively, but you can defend and rebound. Against Forestburg, we put all three phases together.”

Slidell hit nine of its 20 3-point attempts.

Talamantes led the way with 17 points. Franklin finished with 16 points. Bailey Meyer added 10 points.

Slidell looked to remain unbeaten in district Friday at home against Midway. The Lady Greyhounds hit the road to Tioga Tuesday.
