The Eaton Lady Eagles hit three free throws in the final 20 seconds to edge the Decatur Lady Eagles 44-41 at Decatur High School in the season opener Monday night.

The game was tied at 41 with 26 seconds left. Decatur couldn’t hit the go-ahead basket. A loose-ball foul sent Eaton to the free-throw line where it took the lead for good.

“I was pleased with the effort,” said Decatur coach Billy Garner. “We got after them. We rebounded well. We just didn’t shoot well.”

Decatur shot just 27 percent and hit only nine of 20 free throws.

Decatur did grab 23 offensive boards. Shaylee Smith finished with a double double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Madison Kyle had nine points and seven boards. Hannah Dunning led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Point guard Kylee Fitzgerald handed out six assists with six rebounds and one point.

Decatur fought back from a six-point halftime deficit with a 16-7 run in the third quarter to take a 31-28 lead.

Mineral Wells outscored Boyd 20-5 in the second half to win the season opener 46-20.

Boyd struggled shooting on the night but stayed in the game in the first half. Boyd trailed 11-7 after the first quarter and 26-15 at halftime.

“We did OK in the first and then we just couldn’t buy a basket in the second half,” said Boyd coach Erica Warner. “Mineral Wells is a good team and played well. They were very athletic and quick.”

Lindsey Thorpe led Boyd with seven points. Abby Hays chipped in six.
