Baseball: Hicks captures MVP award – Elder earns top pitcher; Waters takes newcomer

Batting cleanup for the District 8-4A champion Decatur Eagles, Michael Hicks drove in 20 runs and put together an on-base percentage plus slugging (OPS) of 1.093.

Along with hitting .360 and belting a homer, the senior catcher also handled the Decatur pitching staff that was 8-0 in league play.

For his efforts, Hicks was named the league’s MVP.

Hicks was one of eight Eagles to earn district honors. Seven Bridgeport players nabbed spots on the all-district team.

Decatur coach Brian Tickell was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to a sweep of the 8-4A and to the 4A Region I quarterfinals with a 23-11-1 record.

Decatur ace Bryce Elder earned Pitcher of the Year. The junior went 8-2 with a 1.36 ERA in 72 innings with 83 strikeouts and only 18 walks.

Bridgeport sophomore Colton Waters grabbed Newcomer of the Year. Waters hit .266 and knocked in 12 runs. On the mound, he went 2-1 with a 3.67 ERA in 13 1/3 innings.

Decatur’s Jaxon Terrell and Bridgeport’s Corbin Coleman were first-team pitching selections. Terrell was 7-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 51 1/3 innings. Coleman posted a 5-3 record with a 1.056 ERA in 59 2/3 with 103 strikeouts.

Bridgeport’s Mason Baker and Hayden Sutherland made the first-team infield with Decatur’s Jesus Gam. Baker drove in 10 runs, and Sutherland scored 17 runs. Gam led the Eagles in hitting with a .365 average and scored 21 times.

The first-team outfield included Bridgeport’s Lane Morrow and Decatur’s Tyler Ticknor. Morrow led the Bulls with a .356 average, hitting two homers and knocking in 21 runs. Ticknor batted .326 with a .844 OPS and scored a team-high 24 runs.

Bridgeport’s Chayton Stotts was the first-team utility player and Decatur’s Ben Crofford the designated hitter. Stotts posted a 2.94 ERA in 19 innings. Crofford drove in 10 runs.

Decatur’s Derek Potts made the second-team infield joining teammate Trey Penny as a selection as a utility player. Bridgeport’s Jacob Roberts made the second-team outfield.

DORADO EARNS NEWCOMER

In his first season at catcher for the Paradise Panthers, Patrick Dorado threw out eight of the 14 runners attempting to steal and hit .347 with nine RBIs.

Those numbers earned him District 9-3A Newcomer of the Year.

Dorado was joined on the league squad by six Panthers. The Boyd Yellowjackets had five players earn honors.

Boyd’s Spencer Pellegrini and Paradise’s John Bridgeman were first-team pitching selections.

Pellegrini went 5-2 with a 3.29 ERA for the season, striking out 56. In district, he was 3-1 with a 2.98 ERA. He also hit .391 with 19 RBIs. Bridgeman posted a 1.36 ERA with a 6-3 record, striking out 86.

The first-team infield included Paradise first baseman Bryson Meyers and Boyd second baseman Clay Barnett. Meyers had .969 fielding percentage, while hitting .303 with 21 RBIs. He also posted a 2.77 ERA, going 3-5 with 66 strikeouts. Barnett batted .282 with 16 RBIs and 25 runs from the lead-off spot. He had a .940 fielding percentage.

Boyd’s Baylor Manire was the first-team utility player. He went 3-1 with a 2.29 ERA on the mound. He went 2-0 in district with 0.55 ERA. He hit .308 in 9-3A play.

Boyd pitcher Evan Stephenson and outfielder Colton Meadows made the second team. They were joined by Paradise second baseman Blaine Gibson, third baseman Bridger Skogberg, shortstop Matthew Whalen and utility player Anthony Walton.

MELTON GARNERS MVP

Before a broken foot ended his season a month early, Chico’s Tyler Melton obliterated opposing pitching.

The senior batted .673 with an OPS of 2.26, eight homers and 39 RBIs. He was also 6-0 on the mound with a 1.27 ERA.

The season earned Melton the 10-2A MVP.

Seven Dragons received 10-2A honors. Alvord landed six players on the all-district team.

Chico’s Cameron Weatherly took Pitcher of the Year after going 7-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 59 2/3 innings with 87 strikeouts. He also hit .471 with two homers and 33 RBIs.

Jaston McBee earned Offensive Player of the Year, hitting .515 and scoring 52 runs out of the leadoff spot. He had 51 hits, including two homers.

Alvord’s Ryan Bartholomew took Defensive MVP, throwing out 14 runners behind the plate. He batted .372 with 18 RBIs.

Chico’s Jeremy Blanks was the first-team catcher with a .974 fielding percentage to go along with a .352 batting average.

The first-team infield included Alvord first baseman Connor Patterson and shortstop Cooper Herring and Chico second baseman Kalan Johnson. Patterson batted .341 with 14 RBIs. Herring hit .392 with 21 RBIs. Johnson batted .357 with 24 RBIs and scored 42 runs.

Alvord’s Kaleb Krejcarek and Chico’s Jerod Blanks made the first-team outfield.

Krejcarek batted .295 and had seven outfield assists. Blanks batted .407 with 22 RBIs.

Alvord pitcher Ethan Machac and outfielder Crese Redman earned second-team spots with Chico utility player Brady North.

MAY MAKES FIRST-TEAM

Texas Tech signee Dustin May closed out his high school career for the Northwest Texans, going 4-2 with a 1.63 ERA, striking out 69 with 13 walks.

May, who is expected to be picked in next week’s MLB draft, was one of three Texans that earned 5-6A honors.

Shortstop Tanner Treadway and first baseman Cayde Ward made the first team. Treadway hit .394 with 10 RBIs. Ward knocked in 23 runs and batted .369.
