Festival promises family fun

Bridgeport’s 34th annual Butterfield Stage Days Festival is coming up Saturday, and the Chamber of Commerce has prepared a day full of events and contests.

The festival, created to celebrate Bridgeport’s history as a stop on the Butterfield Stage Line, will be held at Harwood Park next to downtown Bridgeport from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 14.

The full schedule is as follows:

  • 7 a.m. – Vendor and cook-off check-ins
  • 9:30 a.m. – Flag ceremony with Wise County Veterans Group
  • 10 a.m. – Festival introduction with Scott Hiler and Judi Conger; Battle of the Schools pancake eating contest at the main stage; bingo begins
  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Disc golf tournament with flex start. Children 13 and under play six holes free, adults in the rec division will pay a $5 entry fee to play six holes and advanced division participants may play 18 holes for a $10 entry fee. Discs will be provided if necessary, and the top three competitors will win a trophy and a disc. Registration is walk-up.
  • 10:30 a.m. – North Texas Karate demonstration at the main stage
  • 11 a.m. – Miss Twisters Dance on main stage
  • 11:30 a.m. – University of Gymnastics on main stage
  • Noon – Rodeo Clown Contest on main stage; roping dummy contest
  • 1 p.m. – Rib cook-off, with a grand prize of $1,500 cash; Carolyn Moore performs on main stage; dessert and margarita judging begins in pavilion, cash prizes for winners
  • 1:30 p.m. – Monty Dawson performs on the main stage
  • 2 p.m. – People’s choice public voting begins for ribs; rib judging begins
  • 2:30 p.m. – Emilee Newton performs on the main stage
  • 3 p.m. – Brandon Gentry performs on the main stage
  • 4 p.m. – Rib cook-off, margarita and dessert winners announced on main stage
  • 5 p.m. – Festival ends

The 10th annual PRCA Butterfield Stage Days Rodeo also extends into Saturday. Events begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunset Retreat and Weddings Arena, 790 Farm Road 920 in Bridgeport. Tickets are $13.65.
