An interest in raising backyard chickens continues to grow in Wise County. This stems from families having the desire to grow their own food and from youth bringing home chicks from their classrooms’ Egg to Chick project. Either way, we are excited that we’re in the middle of a chicken frenzy around here!

To learn more about establishing your own coop, join us for the 6th Annual Wise Chicks Coop Tour Saturday, May 7. The day will start out at 9 a.m. with Raising Chickens 101 by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension staff at the Women’s Building on the Wise County Fairgrounds. Maps will be provided at the end of the educational session, and participants are encouraged to continue on a self-guided coop tour throughout the county.

All locations will be marked with yellow coop tour signs, so keep your eyes out. The best part about the tour is that each coop and the chicks that reside there are different! This event is fun for the whole family, especially since raising chickens is not a project limited by age.

If you have questions, call Texas A&M AgriLife Extension-Wise County at 940-627-3341.
