After starting their varsity football program at 2-0, the Victory Christian Academy Patriots will get an unexpected off week.

The Patriots’ scheduled opponent Rockwall Christian closed its school.

“They didn’t open up this year,” said VCA coach Joe Berry. “I’ve been calling to confirm our game and then reached another school in Rockwall and found out they didn’t open.”

The early off date is not bad according to Berry. The Patriots are nursing several injuries, including a sprained ankle by Gideon McPeek.

Berry pointed out the downside is the Patriots already were scheduled for an open date Sept. 17.

“We don’t need two weeks off,” Berry said.

The Patriots beat Victory Life of Durant, Okla., 47-19 last week with a huge game from Gideon McPeek and Justin McBride. McPeek connected with McBride for five. touchdowns, throwing for 242 yards. McBride finished with 212 yards receiving.

“We played well,” Berry said. “We got off to a slow start. They were blitzing a lot. The second half we cleaned that up.”
