Heading into the final two weeks of the season, the Decatur Eagles are alone at the top of District 4-4A Division I.

Decatur pasted Wichita Falls Hirschi 63-24 last Friday, while Mineral Wells tripped up Graham to leave the Eagles as the league’s lone unbeaten team.

Decatur (7-1) will try to remain unbeaten in district when they head to Gainesville’s Leopard Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

“We’re right where we want to be,” said Decatur coach Mike Fuller. “We’ve sill got to beat Graham to win the district. But this week, we’re getting ready to play Gainesville.”

The Eagles put on an offensive clinic Friday against Hirschi, piling up 664 yards – 364 on the ground. That was while not playing leading rusher Payton McAlister, who is still recovering from an ankle injury, and pulling the starters in the first half.

“We played well,” Fuller said. “Fortunately, our JV kids got rained out on Thursday and we took a bunch of kids. Everyone got in.”

Tyler Ticknor ran for three scores and Dylan Nation added a pair.

Ryan Durdon returned a pair of punts for touchdowns and also caught a 33-yard pass for a score.

Fuller expects McAlister to rejoin the lineup Friday after missing most of the last two weeks.

“He’ll get some work in, but I want him to be pain-free,” Fuller said.

The Eagles face a Gainesville team that fell to 1-7 and 1-2 in district after a 14-2 loss to Burkburnett Friday.

The Leopards’ running game did manage 209 yards with 86 from Calion Baker and 61 from Zukari Long.

“We’ll have the same philosophy as every week. We worry more about ourselves and taking care of executing and playing hard,” Fuller said.

“They have good athletes. We can’t let them get confidence and cause turnovers.”
