A year ago, Justin McBride led the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship state championship race in the final mile when his knee gave out.

“I had the lead and was 15 seconds ahead of second when my knee gave out,” McBride said.

Saturday, McBride made good on a second shot at the title, capturing the TCAF individual title. The Victory Christian junior won the 5K race in 18:11, holding off Trinity Christian’s Nicholas Scheffe by two seconds.

“It’s very humbling after last year,” McBride said.

McBride, who is also on the Patriots’ district champion football team, played in a game Friday afternoon and then ran the race on Saturday. He explained that he’s only had a chance to run in three meets this year.

“I’m proud of my time,” McBride said. “I didn’t run as much this year because of also playing football.”

McBride jumped into the lead right away, which he said was the plan.

“I just stayed in that position,” McBride said.

Victory coach Natalie Wanderski commented on McBride’s dedication to come back and win the title.

“I’m super proud of him,” Wanderski said. “He would’ve won last year if his knee wouldn’t have gave out.”

Victory finished third as a team with 70 points. Matthew Schwartz was sixth in 19:10. Lyndon Harvey took 18th in 21:11. Jared McBride garnered 23rd in 22:01. Davis Shriver ran 23:32 for 34th.

Zara Rodriguez finished 15th in the girls 3,200 in 16:21. Lydia Maxwell took 17th in 16:25.
