The Jacksboro Tigers took down the Boyd Yellowjackets in a 58-57 rollercoaster Friday night at the Jacksboro High School gym.

It was tied at halftime, with Boyd’s Trace Moran and Jacksboro’s Caleb Martin battling it out.

Moran finished the first half with 11 points, while Martin had 12.

As the third quarter began, it was clear Boyd’s Trey Gordon wanted to make up for lost time.

After scoring only two points in the opening half, Gordon scored 10 points coming out of halftime to lead the Yellowjackets to a 17-12 third quarter, giving Boyd a 46-41 advantage heading into the fourth.

Boyd coach Oscar Hernandez thought that would be enough for his team to put the Tigers away.

“I thought we battled nice until the end,” Hernandez said. “I told my guys if we could win the third quarter we would win the game. We went out there and took the third quarter 17-12.”

Though the turnover bug affected both teams throughout – each finishing with 20 – it stung the ‘Jackets in the most crucial minutes of the game.

“They clogged the middle of the paint well,” Hernandez said. “That’s where we wanted to get the ball. Sometimes the pass looked open, but by the time we got the ball there they would get a hand on it and be off to the races.”

The Tigers turned several steals into easy transition buckets down the stretch.

But with seconds left, Moran made a layup to put Boyd back in the lead.

With the pressure on the Tigers, Martin took the ball the length of the court and finished a finger roll with only 2.3 seconds remaining in the game.

“I told them we needed to step up and get that one stop, and we didn’t get it,” Hernandez said. “We tried to go with a soft, full-court man at the end just to burn clock. The plan was for us just to switch on all screens and we just made a mistake on a screen there at the end.

“No. 14 [Martin] is a good athlete and you saw what he could do, going right down the middle to get the layup.”

Martin led all scorers with 27 points, while Jacksboro’s Tyler Pippin added 13 and Payton Laake had 12.

Boyd was led by Moran who finished the game with 15 points.

Gordon and Reece Jordan each had 12, with Jordan making four of his five free-throw attempts. Jordan also crashed the boards for Boyd.

Dalton Lyon finished with eight points that included two 3-pointers, and Judd Smith finished the game with five.

Aaron Hammett and Dylan Powers had two points each, and Sequoia Smith finished the game with one point.
