Tyler Maynard’s freshman year, the Slidell Greyhounds swept Bellevue. Since then, he’s been on the wrong side of the scoreboard against the Eagles.

“We’ve lost to them four times in a row,” the senior Maynard admitted. “We’ve had close games but they’ve come out on top.”

Maynard and the Greyhounds will look to end that streak against Bellevue and hopefully take over the District 21-A lead Friday when they welcome the Eagles to Slidell High School gym.

Slidell (18-4) and Bellevue entered Tuesday at 5-0 in 21-A and expected to improve to 6-0, heading into the showdown.

“It’s a big game,” said Slidell senior Khristian Talamantes. “It’ll decide who is the best in the district.”

Along with being a matchup for the district lead, it will be a contest of contrasting styles. The smaller Greyhounds will be trying to push the tempo while Bellevue will look to feed the ball inside to their large posts.

“We’re two different type of teams,” said Slidell coach Todd McCormick. “They have size and our quickness is our strength. We’ve got to try to neutralize their size.”

The Greyhounds have enjoyed success running the floor. Friday, they blasted Prairie Valley 82-34. Slidell jumped out to a 26-11 lead in the first quarter and built the advantage to 46-17 at halftime.

“This system fits us,” said Maynard, who poured in 32 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, handed out seven assists and made four steals against Prairie Valley. “We have to play like this to win. The way we speed up the game creates more opportunities.”

Talamantes finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Talamantes and Maynard have been the leaders on the floor for the Greyhounds but they point out that the younger players are growing into their roles.

“We’ve definitely needed that because we’re limited with upperclassmen,” Talamantes said.
