HOUSE CATCHES FIRE FOR SECOND TIME – An unoccupied mobile home in Newark caught fire Tuesday morning as two men were attempting to dismantle the structure. Wise County Deputy Fire Marshal J.C. Travis said Mickey Murphrey and his nephew, Brett Kennan, were attempting to tear apart the empty house, which was already extensively burned from a previous fire. In a bizarre turn of events, the house caught fire again, this time burning to the ground. RAINY START – Rain began falling in Wise County during the early morning hours. As of 7:45 a.m., rainfall totals included 0.24 of an inch in Decatur and 0.11 in Rhome. The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of rain today and a 40 percent chance of rain tonight and tomorrow.
CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER HIRED – Northwest ISD has named Adam Feind the district’s new chief technology officer. Feind comes to Northwest from Midway ISD, where he has led the district in strategic planning and one-to-one virtual desktop initiative for the past 16 years. Feind will oversee technology, instructional technology and applications software at NISD.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES – Decatur Church of Christ is hosting Gear Up, a free school supply event, 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10. Full-size backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away to students in kindergarten through sixth grade who are accompanied by an adult. There will also be free haircuts, clothes, books and other back-to-school services. A barbecue meal will be served. The church is at the corner of Farm Road 51 South and Preskitt Road.

WATERMELON FESTIVAL – The Alvord Watermelon Festival is Aug. 8-9. Vendors are needed, and cookoff participants are being registered. Friday night’s festivities will include a washer tournament and the Mike Watts Memorial Scholarship fish fry, as well as Phil Hamilton on stage. A pageant is 10 a.m. Saturday. SPECIAL COMMISSIONERS MEETING – Wise County commissioners have a special called meeting 1:30 p.m. Thursday to hear a report by Tax Assessor-Collector Monte Shaw on the 2014 property tax rates for the county and college branch maintenance taxes. Commissioners will use these reports as they set proposed tax rates and work through budget workshops. The preliminary fiscal year 2015 budgets for the county and Weatherford College Wise County will also be presented and copies given to commissioners for their review before budget workshops scheduled for Aug. 19-20. Thursday’s meeting and all budget workshops will be held at the Wise County Sheriff’s Office training room, 200 Rook Ramsey Dr., in Decatur.
