FLU MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAN’S DEATH – The death of a Wise County man may have been the result of influenza. Lee Ann Cummings, registered nurse and emergency room director of Wise Regional Health System in Decatur, said the man in his early 40s appeared to have died from flu-like symptoms, although they are awaiting confirmation from the medical examiner. The ER also received a case of a 25-year-old man who was having such bad respiratory problems from the flu he had to be transferred to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas to receive a special breathing treatment known as extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). CHICO CONSIDERS SECURITY CAMERAS – After recent vandalism and criminal mischief in downtown Chico and the nearby city park, the city is considering adding security cameras to monitor those areas. The item was discussed at last night’s council meeting, and although no action was taken, council members seemed to be in favor of moving forward with such a project. One cost estimate presented to the council would be just over $9,300 plus a $76 monthly operating fee for a camera system.

ELECTION CALLED – At its meeting Tuesday, the Bridgeport City Council called a May 10 general and special election. The general election will be held to elect the positions of mayor and Place 1 and 2 on the council, held by Keith McComis, A.Z. Smith and Kathy Kennedy. The special election will determine a successor for Place 3. Jimmy Meyers was appointed to the post in August to fill a vacancy created when Kevin Lopez resigned. According to local government code, the person appointed to fill the vacancy serves until the next regular election.

RRC TO HIRE SEISMOLOGIST – After hundreds of local residents attended a town hall meeting in Azle last week to discuss the recent earthquakes in the area, the Texas Railroad Commission announced yesterday it will hire a seismologist to investigate the cause of the quakes. The area experienced more than 30 earthquakes over the past two months. Read more in today’s Messenger.

PROJECT SHOW – The Paradise Project Show is Saturday. Food and crafts will be exhibited at the elementary school cafeteria, and the livestock show will be at the project barn. To enter, bring crafts, baked goods and photography to the cafeteria between 8 and 9 a.m. Judging begins at 9:15, and the building will open to the public at 10:15 a.m. All projects must be picked up by 11:30. Weigh-in for the animals is 7:30-9:30 a.m. The show begins at 10. For more information, call 940-969-5000.

DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE – Decatur Junior Woman’s Club 8th Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, “One Enchanted Evening,” will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Decatur Civic Center. Pre-registration forms must be received before Friday, Jan. 17. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of the dance.

ADVOCATE TRAINING – Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) new volunteer advocate training class starts 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23 at the CASA office, 300 East Pecan in Decatur. The three-hour classes will be held each Thursday for 10 weeks, and dinner will be served prior to each class. Also, an informational meeting is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the CASA office.
