ALVORD HOUSE FIRE – Firefighters were able to save a home in Alvord this morning, but two dogs were killed in the smoke and flames. The fire was reported at 6:30 a.m. at a single story wooden frame home located in the 400 block of W. Elm downtown. The fire started in the back room of the house where a small gas heater was being used to keep the two family pets warm. The low this morning was about 20 degrees. It’s unknown at this time how the fire started though. Firefighters from Alvord, Chico and Decatur responded quickly and prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the home. Alvord Fire Chief Sam Hahn said the door being closed to the back room also helped prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the house. Red Cross was contacted to help the family.
