BOONSVILLE FIRE – Numerous fire departments including Boonsville/Balsora, Bridgeport, Salt Creek  and Poolville were dispatched to a structure fire in the 1900 block of County Road 3855 south of Boonsville overnight. The fire was reported around 11 Tuesday night. There were no reports of injuries. The first department on the scene reported a structure fully involved. The fire is under investigation. FORMER SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT – Former Decatur ISD Supt. J.D. Kennedy, now superintendent in McKinney, announced his retirement and resignation last night at a McKinney School Board meeting. Kennedy will retire at the end of the year. After leaving Decatur, Kennedy was superintendent in Midlothian before becoming superintendent in McKinney.

DECATUR SWEEPS NO. 1 BROCK – The Decatur Lady Eagles, ranked No. 2 in 4A, swept 3A’s top-ranked Brock Lady Eagles Tuesday, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 in their volleyball match. Caroline Lowery put down 13 kills. Cooper Martin added 10. Stormi Leonard handed out 21 assists and made 10 digs. Boyd took down Bridgeport in three games 25-13, 25-11, 25-14 behind 15 kills by Maddy Busch. Baylie Harris doled out 16 assists. Chico fell to Petrolia 25-11, 25-15, 25-19. Chisholm Trail beat Northwest 25-23, 25-19, 25-22. Camryn Berryhill recorded 13 kills. Tatum Talley made 18 digs.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE – Rhome Fire Department is conducting a membership drive during the Labor Day weekend. Rhome firefighters will be at Shale Creek 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday. Applications will be available on site. Meet the volunteer firefighters and see the firetruck. Applications are also available at the Rhome Fire Station, 261 N. School Rd., over Labor Day weekend or at Rhome City Hall, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

TASTE OF WISE – Organizers of the 4th Annual Taste of Wise County say only a few spots remain for restaurants, caterers and food/drink facilities to participate in the tasting event, which is 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday at Decatur Civic Center. HEALTH FORUM – The Wise County Health Forum meets at 9 a.m. Thursday in the lecture hall at Weatherford College Wise County. All Wise County community health stakeholders are invited. The group will share information about latest events and issues related to community public health.

DISD BUDGET HEARING – The public will have a chance to learn details and offer feedback on the 2014-2015 school year budget at Decatur tonight. The school district will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget and tax rate at a meeting 5:30 p.m. at the DISD Administration Building, 307 S. Cates St. Following the hearing, the board will vote to adopt the budget and tax rate. The district is proposing a total tax rate of $1.29 per $100 valuation for the 2014-2015 school year. That includes a $1.04 maintenance and operations tax rate and $0.25 for debt service. It represents a one-cent decrease from the current year’s tax rate.

FALL SPORTS PREVIEW – Today’s Wise County Messenger features our annual Fall Sports Preview, including coverage of local football, cross country and volleyball teams as well as cheerleaders, drill teams and bands. Today’s paper also includes previews of the season-opening football games this weekend.
