ELECTION DAY – Polls opened at 7 this morning and will remain open until 7 tonight for the Democratic and Republican primary elections. Wise County residents will vote in one of 25 precincts. A full list of voting precincts was featured in the Saturday Wise County Messenger still available on newsstands. Voters in Precincts 2-7 and 2-8 should be aware of a new voting location this year: Assumption Catholic Church, 1305 S. Deer Park in Decatur. Also, remember to bring a valid photo identification. YOUTH FAIR, DAY 2 – The breeding dairy doe and breeding Boer show started at 7:30 this morning at the Wise County Youth Fair. The horse speed show will begin at 8:30 followed by the performance show at NRS Arena. The breeding swine show is at 2:30 p.m., and the 4-H Parade of Fashion is at 6:30.
TRASH DELAYS – Due to the icy conditions Monday, trash pickup in the City of Decatur will be off one day all week. Trash that was supposed to be picked up yesterday will be picked up today. Tuesday’s normal pickup will be on Wednesday, Thursday’s on Friday and Friday’s on Saturday. Recycling will be on its normal day – Wednesday.
WOMAN WITH TIES TO EBEL SENTENCED – Stevie Marie Vigil was sentenced to 27 months in prison yesterday in Colorado after pleading guilty to buying the handgun Evan Ebel used to kill two people in Colorado and shoot a Montague County deputy during a traffic stop last March. Ebel was killed March 21 after a shootout with officers in Decatur. Vigil pleaded guilty to one count of providing a firearm to a felon.
DROUGHT CONTINUES – Wise County received only 1 inch of precipitation in the month of February, according to weather watcher Doyle Green of Decatur. The average amount for February is 2.45 inches. For the first two months of the year, Wise County received only 1.44 inches of rain. Temperatures in February ranged from a high of 80 on Feb. 18 to a low of 12 on Feb. 6. Below-freezing temperatures were recorded on 20 of the 28 days in the month.
EARLY LITERACY CLASSES – Decatur Public Library offers Early Literacy Classes every week for young children. PARENT CAFE – The Wise Coalition for Healthy Children and the Decatur Public Library will host a Parent Cafe 6-7 tonight. Children in kindergarten through second grade can attend K2 Play that will take place at the same time at the library. PANCAKE DAY – You can celebrate National Pancake Day today and help raise money for the nonprofit Shriners Hospital for Children. IHOP in Decatur will serve guests a free stack of pancakes, and diners will be invited to make a donation to designated charities, including Shriners.
