WHITE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT – The longest-tenured member of the Decatur School Board has announced he will not seek another term. Alan White, who has held Place 3 on the school board since 1999, said Monday he’s decided the time is right to retire. At 15 years, White has one of the longest school board tenures in the school’s history and is among the longest-serving current school board members in the county. The filing period for local school boards and city councils opens Wednesday and runs through Feb. 28.

PAY YOUR TAXES – Wise County Chief Appraiser Mickey Hand reminds property owners that Friday is the deadline to pay 2013 property taxes. The appraisal district serves as a consolidated tax collection office for the county’s 18 taxing units. Hand said people who come in on the last day should be prepared to wait in a long line. People paying by mail must have their payments postmarked no later than Jan. 31. Taxpayers may also pay taxes online with a credit card at myswdata.com (using the drop down “Wise CAD” option). A 2.4 percent charge is added to all credit card transactions. The appraisal district’s office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The mailing address is 400 East Business 380, Decatur, Texas 76234, and the phone number is 940-627-3081. Wise County Tax Assessor/Collector Monte Shaw also reminds residents to pay their county taxes by Friday as well. His office is located at 404 W. Walnut in Decatur.

TXI SOLD – Texas Industries, with large operations in Wise County, has been sold to Martin Marietta Materials for $2.06 billion in a transaction announced Tuesday, according to the Wall Street Journal. The sale was an all-stock transaction. Both TXI and Martin Marietta have large gravel mining operations in the Bridgeport/Chico area.

PAYING FOR COLLEGE – A Financial Aid Night will be held 6 p.m. Thursday in the Bridgeport High School library. Counselors will share with families of seniors information about FAFSA and the college financial aid process. All parents of seniors and senior students are invited.

DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE – Decatur Junior Woman’s Club 8th Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, “One Enchanted Evening,” is 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Decatur Civic Center. For more information visit www.decaturjuniorwomansclub.com. Tickets will be available at the door the night of the dance.

CHAMBER BANQUET – The Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce Casino Royale annual banquet is 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Decatur Civic Center. There will be food, awards, casino games, live and silent auction, live entertainment and a raffle, including the chance to win a trip to Las Vegas or $1,000 cash. Dress is Bridgeport casual. FUNERAL for Little John “Bull/Mo” Morman, 52, of North Richland Hills is 2 p.m. Friday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Aurora Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
