ICE LEADS TO MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS – Local roads began to freeze Monday evening leading to multiple accidents across Wise County. Shortly after 5:30 p.m. several were reported on U.S. 380 near Bridgeport and west of town, as well as on Farm Road 2264 south of Decatur. Just before 7 p.m. two accidents were reported on Farm Road 730 South, just outside Decatur and multiple wrecks occurred on U.S. 81/287 near Rhome. The northbound lanes of 81/287 were shut down for a period of time after at least three 18-wheelers jackknifed in the area of County Road 4421. A Rhome police officer said on the scanner Tuesday morning that he responded to nine accidents overnight on 81/287 north of Farm Road 407. There was a vehicle that caught fire after flipping on County Road 2048, and a house fire was reported in the 500 block of S. Hitt Street in Boyd.

FATAL ACCIDENT, STUDENTS INVOLVED – TV station WFAA reported last night that one person was killed and two injured in a car accident near Northwest High School on Farm Road 156 in Justin. Northwest ISD confirmed to the Messenger that Northwest students were involved, but their names have not yet been released. According to WFAA, Medstar reported one fatality and said another patient was rushed to Texas Health Fort Worth hospital in critical condition. The third person had minor injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation by Texas Department of Public Safety.

WISE IN WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY – All Wise County schools are closed today due to another round of winter weather. A light rain fell most of Monday and began to quickly freeze just before sunset, creating sheets of ice and leading to multiple accidents. The county remains in a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. today with a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet and light snow expected throughout the day. Closures and delays are as follows: Alvord, Decatur, Chico, Bridgeport, Boyd, Paradise, Northwest and Slidell ISDs, Victory Christian Academy and all Weatherford College campuses are closed. Also, Wise County government offices and the Wise County Appraisal District plan to open at 10. Meals on Wheels will not deliver today. Remember to check on your elderly neighbors and friends. Election training scheduled for this morning at the sheriff’s office has been canceled. Check WCMessenger.com throughout the day for updates on closures or events that have been rescheduled.

ROWDEN GETS STATE NOD – Decatur junior swimmer Katey Rowden received call-ups to the state meet in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly Monday. She finished second in both events at regionals last weekend.

EAGLES COMPLETE SWEEP – The Decatur Eagles completed the sweep of 9-3A Monday with a 69-38 win over Krum. In other boys action, Boyd fell to 9-2A champion Ponder 65-26.

GIRLS BEGIN PLAYOFFS – Several Wise County teams will begin the basketball playoffs tonight. Paradise takes on Godley at Weatherford at 6. Alvord will take on Maypearl on the same floor at 8. GAME CANCELED – In other playoff action, Decatur was to play Aubrey at 7 at Flower Mound Marcus, but the game has been canceled due to weather. It will be rescheduled.

SERVICE for Byrl D. “Butch” Proctor, 82, of Boyd is pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.
