COUNCIL RATIFIES HIRES – During a special meeting Monday, Rhome officials ratified hires made by Mayor Louis Godfrey in late June and early July during a hiring freeze. “In as much as these were replacement hirings [the hires were] in the best interest of the city,” Councilwoman Jo Ann Wilson said. ” … This is just some housekeeping.” Godfrey hired Sam Dorsett to replace Preston Gilliam as the public works director; and Brandon Davis to take over as police chief, the post previously held by James Rose; and Sherrie Dast, who took over after the retirement of Sherry Taylor as the city’s municipal court clerk.
COURTHOUSE ELEVATOR REPAIRS – Yesterday Wise County commissioners awarded a $70,000 bid to Otis Elevator Co. to make repairs to the courthouse elevator. County Judge Glenn Hughes told commissioners at a July meeting that the elevator needs a double cylinder, and Otis, the company which currently maintains it, will complete the work. NISD OKS TAX RATE – The Northwest ISD school board approved a tax rate of $1.4525 per $100 of evaluation Monday night for 2014-15, which is the same as last year’s. The rate includes $1.04 for maintenance and operations and a debt service rate of 41.25 cents. NISD trustees also approved the issuance of $75 million in bonds from the $255 million bond package passed by voters in 2012. The issuance is projected to be supported within the current debt service rate of 41.25 cents.
BISD ADOPTS TAX RATE, BUDGET – The Bridgeport ISD board of trustees adopted a 2014-2015 budget of more than $22 million at its meeting Monday night. The board also adopted a set tax rate of $1.23280 per $100 valuation. This tax rate is composed of a $1.04 tax for maintenance and operations and a $0.19280 interest and sinking fund tax which would be used to pay for bonded debt on construction and equipment. APPLY FOR DATCU JUNIOR BOARD – DATCU Credit Union is currently accepting applications for its junior board of directors. Requirements include being a high school senior graduating in May 2015, mandatory attendance at four meetings during the school year and submission of an application on or before Thursday, Aug. 28. All applicants will be selected by an external committee and will receive a $250 scholarship to be used toward higher education. To apply, visit datcu.org/about us. BATTLE OF TOP TEAMS - The Decatur Lady Eagles, ranked second in the latest 4A TGCA volleyball poll, will play host to the top ranked team in 3A, Brock, at 6 tonight. In other area action, Boyd heads to Bridgeport for a 6 p.m. match. Petrolia comes to Chico. Paradise takes on Ponder at home. Northwest takes on Keller Chisholm Trail at home.
MOVIE NIGHT – Rhome Assembly of God in Rhome will host a free “Outdoor Family Movie Night” Friday. The movie is a true story of a little boy who died and went to heaven and what he saw and experienced there. Concessions will be available. Bring lawn blankets, lawn chairs and mosquito spray. Movie starts a few minutes after sundown (around 8:10 p.m.)
COLLEGE BIRTHDAY – Weatherford College will celebrate 145 years with a birthday celebration 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Historic Plaza outside the Academic Building in Weatherford. There will be a brief ceremony, balloons and cake.
CHAMBER LUNCHEON - The Decatur Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon is 11:30 today at Decatur Civic Center. Guest speaker is Rod Townsend.
