FORMER JAILER SENTENCED TO 45 YEARS – Former Wise County Sheriff’s Office inmate work crew supervisor Jeff Shurbet, 48, of Paradise pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first degree felony, and was sentenced to 45 years in prison. Court documents indicate the female victim was 11 at the time of the assault. During the investigation, Shurbet confessed to the assaults, which may have taken place over a number of years. His trial had been scheduled to begin next week in 271st District Court in Decatur.

CITY OFFICES CLOSED – Decatur City Hall offices and the Decatur Public Library will be closed Friday and Saturday for the Independence Day holiday and will resume normal hours on Monday. In case of an emergency, call 911.

DUMPSITES CLOSED FRIDAY – Wise County dumpsites will be closed Friday for the holiday. They will reopen with regular hours on Saturday.

BRIDGEPORT HOLIDAY CLOSINGS – City of Bridgeport offices and the municipal court will be closed Friday in observance of Independence Day. The library will be closed Friday and Saturday. The city pool will be open from noon-3 p.m. on Friday. Regular business hours will resume on Monday, July 7. If you need immediate non-emergency assistance, call 940-683-3430.

WISE COUNTY HOLIDAY CLOSINGS – Several Wise County Administration offices will close early today. Citizens should call the office they need before going. All Wise County administration offices will be closed Friday in observance of Independence Day. The Wise County Animal Shelter will be closed Friday and Saturday and will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 8.

CHICO CHAMBER – The Chico Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon July 8 at the Senior Citizens Building on the west side of the Chico Square. Lunch is $7 a plate. County Clerk Sherry Lemon will be guest speaker.

BAKE SALE – Open Arms non-profit will have a bake sale 10 a.m. Friday at Bealls in Decatur to raise money to help four families with their electric bills. The organization will also accept the donation of baked goods to sell. For information, call 940-683-5036.

SEEKING FIREFIGHTERS – Rhome Volunteer Fire Department is having a membership drive today and Friday. Applications will be available at the fire station, 261 N. School Road, or city hall, 105 1st St. Fire personnel will be at the station to answer questions. No experience is necessary, and training will be provided.

GARAGE SALE – The Rhome Senior Citizen garage sale is today through Saturday at 401 E. Hickory St. To donate items, call Bill Childress at 817-946-7522.

PATRIOTIC POOL NIGHT – The Bridgeport City Pool will hold “Born in the USA” night 4-8 tonight. Admission is $2. For more information call 940-683-3480 or 940-683-4344.

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP – The Alzheimer’s (and related dementia) support group will meet at 7 tonight in the boardroom at the Wise Regional Health System west campus in Decatur. FUNERAL for Cora Lou St. John, 78, of Chico is 10 a.m. today at Living Water Church in Chico with burial at Cumby Cemetery. Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Martha Pauline Keath, 103, of Boyd is 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Boyd with burial at Boyd Cemetery. Family visitation is noon-2 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd is handling arrangements.

SERVICE for Sharlene Howerton, 67, of Decatur is pending at Coker-Hawkins.
