MEZA GETS 20 YEARS - A Wise County jury sentenced Alberto Jose Meza to 20 years in prison Wednesday after finding him guilty of possession of a controlled substance. Meza was arrested July 17, 2012 in Rhome after he was pulled over for speeding at 2:30 a.m. More than 10 grams of cocaine, along with baggies and a digital scale, were found hidden behind the dashboard of the pickup he was driving. The sentence is the maximum for the second-degree felony. The jury did not assess a fine. Assistant District Attorney Patrick Berry said he was “proud of the jury for sending a message to people who want to bring drugs into Wise County – go somewhere else.”

CAR BURGLARIES - Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins reported more car burglaries in Decatur Monday night. These occurred in Lipsey Addition and Thousand Oaks. He’s asking residents to call the police department at 940-627-1500 if they see anyone walking in neighborhoods late at night. He’s also encouraging people to remove items from their vehicles or make sure things are stored out of sight.

PROPERTY AUCTION - The Wise County Appraisal District and the Wise County Tax Office are selling approximately 100 tracts of real property 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Grand Hall A at the Decatur Civic Center. Many properties have a $250 minimum bid. The properties are listed online at isouthwestdata.com (select Wise CAD, Downloads and Forms, Tax Sale). Bid packets are also available at the tax and appraisal district offices.

ATHLETIC PHYSICALS – Alvord athletes in seventh through 12th grade can get physicals at Alvord Medical Clinic next week. Boys physicals are 8 a.m. to noon Monday, July 14, and girls are 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, July 15. Cost is $20. Athletic forms are available at the high school, middle school, field house and the clinic. They must be complete and signed by a parent.

VETERANS BREAKFAST – The Wise County Veterans Group will have its weekly breakfast 8 a.m. Saturday at The Club at Runaway Bay. All Wise County veterans are invited to attend.

LIBRARY PROGRAM – The Rhome library will host story time and crafts for children at 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays, starting today, through Aug. 7. Daniabelle Hromanik will provide stories in English and Spanish for children up to age 11. Young children must be accompanied by a parent.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - The Wise County Committee on Aging is seeking volunteers for the Meals on Wheels program. Anyone wishing to volunteer their time delivering meals is encouraged to contact the office at 940-627-5329.

GET GROSS IN CHICO – Boys and girls are invited to attend Chico Public Library’s ‘Grossology’ program Thursday, July 10 from 11 am – Noon. Gross activities will include fake snot and gloop! For more information contact Michelle at (940) 644-2330.

BOOSTERS TO MEET – The Mighty Marching Maroon Band Boosters’ July meeting will be Tuesday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at the BHS Bandhall. The agenda will include the Rock ‘N Rev Car Show set Saturday, Aug. 2. Anyone interested in supporting the band kids is invited to attend.
