FIRE DAMAGES BOYD HOME – Rescue workers arrived in time to quickly quell a house on fire and safely rescue three dogs trapped inside yesterday morning in Boyd. An off-duty deputy passing by happened to notice heavy smoke billowing from the top of a brick home located in the 100 block of Smith Street. He called 911 and within moments Wise County Medics, Boyd PD and firefighters from Boyd, Newark, Cottondale and Rhome all responded. Boyd ESD No. 1 Fire Chief Randy Ingram said the fire appeared to start in the attic over the garage. The cause is unknown at this time. A Wise County Animal Control officer arrived to check on the dogs, which were all in good health. Homeowner Shelly Rodgers lives there with her son. Neither were home when the fire started. It appears firefighters were able to save the structure.

DADDY DAUGHTER DANCE – Decatur Junior Woman’s Club 8th Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, “One Enchanted Evening,” is 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Decatur Civic Center. DEMOCRATS TO MEET – The Wise County Democratic Party will meet at 6:15 p.m. Monday in the Wise County Law Enforcement Center courtroom, 200 Rook Ramsey Dr. in Decatur.

GED CLASSES – There are a limited number of openings for new students in the free Adult Education GED program held 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Weatherford College Wise County campus. Interested students are asked to call instructor Geoffrey Sherman at 940-626-3308 for information regarding the course.

CHAMBER LUNCHEON – The Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon is 11:30 a.m. today at the Bridgeport Community Center, 1102 Lawdwin Ave. The program includes a panel discussion on the oil field.

GT INFORMATIONAL – An informational meeting for parents interested in referring their child to the gifted and talented program at Bridgeport ISD is 6:30 tonight at Bridgeport Elementary School, Room 212. DAR MEETING – The John B. Denton chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution meets 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wise County Heritage Museum. The topic is the U.S.S. Constitution ‘Old Ironsides’ – a look at the battles of this famous ship built in 1795. A Dutch-treat lunch will follow at Catfish O’harlies.

FAMILY HISTORY – The Wise County Genealogical Society will host Jeremy Balkin with Family Tree DNA at its meeting 7 tonight at Decatur Church of Christ. Cost is $5 for non-members.

FUNERALS – Service for Teddy H. Johnson, 80, of Chico is 2 p.m. Friday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport with burial at Chico Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

MEMORIAL service for Tony Fuller, 55, of Paradise is 2 p.m. Friday at the Fuller home. Hawkins-Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

SERVICE for Verna Holloway, 95, of Decatur is pending at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

GRAVESIDE memorial service for David Ray Jones, 65, of Chico is 1 p.m. Saturday at Ball Knob Cemetery in Alvord. Coker-Hawkins is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Bobby Joe Bullard, 77, of Newark is tentatively set for 11 a.m. Monday at Aurora Baptist Church with burial at Aurora Cemetery. Family visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.
