TRAVEL TRAILER FIRE – A mother and daughter escaped injury when the travel trailer they were living in caught fire early Sunday morning at 2161 County Road 2320. Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard said Krystal Maurer was apparently cooking around 2:30 a.m. when the fire started. She and her 6-year-old daughter were able to escape without injuries. By the time fire departments from Decatur and Greenwood-Slidell arrived, the trailer was engulfed in flames. The family lost the trailer and all its contents. Beard said the fire was accidental. Red Cross was called to assist the family. Wise County EMS also responded to the scene.
NICE RAIN – The week is off to a much-needed rainy start. Rain fell in Wise County Sunday morning, and more storms rolled in this morning. Rain was still falling in Wise County when Update went to press. Rainfall totals from yesterday through 7:30 this morning include 2.45 inches in Bridgeport, 2 in Paradise, 1.7 in Alvord, 1.6 in Cottondale and 0.91 in Rhome. The forecast today calls for rain to continue this morning with a 50 percent chance of rain this afternoon.
MESSENGER NAMED BEST IN TEXAS – For the 12th time in 13 years, the Wise County Messenger has been judged the best large semiweekly newspaper in the state of Texas. The Messenger earned the Texas Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest sweepstakes award by garnering 800 points, tops for any division. First place awards were earned in feature writing, general excellence, news writing, routine special section, sports coverage and sports photo. Second place awards were received in advertising, blue moon special section and page design. Third place awards were received in best website, column writing and feature photo. Fourth place awards were received in headline writing and news photo. The awards were presented Saturday at TPA’s annual convention in Corpus Christi.
DEMOCRATIC SOCIAL – The Wise County Democratic Party will host an ice cream social at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the courtroom of the Wise County Law Enforcement Center, 200 Rook Ramsey Dr. in Decatur. Guest speaker is El Paso Mayor and Vietnam veteran John Cook, Democratic candidate for Texas land commissioner. The meeting is open to the public.
BANNER FOR DANE – The community is invited to join the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, Wise County Emergency Medical Services and iCopy in signing a get well banner for Dane Lancaster. The banner will at the Sheriff’s Office at 200 Rook Ramsey Dr. in Decatur today. Lancaster, 11, of Bowie was badly injured in a roping accident May 24. His horse tripped and fell on him causing multiple head and facial fractures with swelling and bleeding on the brain. Dane is the son of Drs. Diran and Kellie Lancaster, who own Lancaster Back and Joint Clinic in Decatur. He’s hospitalized at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.

SERVICE for Beth Geron, 57, of Alvord is pending at Coker-Hawkins.
FUNERAL for William Wheeler, 83, of Rhome is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Coker-Hawkins with burial at Aurora Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
SERVICES for Percy Witty, 86, of Bridgeport and Sharolyn Holder, 67, of Paradise are pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
GRAVESIDE service for Enrique “Ricky G.” Guevara Reyes, 23, of Bridgeport is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at East Bridgeport Cemetery. Family visitation is 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Hawkins-Bridgeport.
SERVICES for Nancy Blank, 78, of Decatur and Francis J. Yarbrough, 71, of Boyd are pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.
FUNERAL for Cecil Barnard, 79, of Boyd is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christian-Hawkins with burial at Pleasant Grove Cemetery No. 1. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
FUNERAL for Stacey Bernal, 34, of Decatur is 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Brady with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery in Brady. Leatherwood Memorial Chapels in Brady is handling arrangements.
