WINTER STORM FORCES CLOSURES, DELAYS – A winter storm swept across Wise County Sunday leaving some roadways covered in ice and snow. Due to the inclement weather, a few school districts and government offices will be closed today, while others will have delayed starts. Alvord, Bridgeport, Chico and Decatur school districts are closed along with Pettit Private School, Victory Christian Academy, Learning Ladder and Weatherford College. Boyd ISD will have a two-hour delay, and Paradise ISD will open at 10. Bridgeport VA Clinic and Wise County government offices will open at 10. Chico City Hall will open at noon. SLIPPERY SUNDAY – A mixture of rain, sleet and snow, combined with below freezing temperatures, created slick roadways Sunday. Accidents were reported on almost all major roads. Slick and icy conditions led to wrecks and rollovers in Alvord, Rhome, Decatur, Newark, Aurora, Slidell and Greenwood. No life-threatening injuries were reported, but firefighters, medics and law enforcement officers worked nonstop throughout the day responding to calls. Roads that were slowed down or temporarily shut down included FM 51, FM 718, U.S. 81/287 and Texas 114. All major roadways were open by this morning, but some ice and snow remained on bridges and overpasses. Drivers are urged to use caution. Precipitation totals (including rain, sleet and snow) included 1 1/2 inches in Decatur, 1 in Alvord and .02 in Rhome.

HONORED EMPLOYEES – The City of Decatur honored its employees and volunteer board members at an appreciation dinner Friday at the Decatur Civic Center. City Manager Brett Shannon presented city hall secretary Nita Morrow with a 20-year service pen while Police Sgt. Mike Picha, Main Street Director Frieda Haley, Larry Brown and Maria Zamora received 15-year pens. Public Works secretary Catherine Griffin received a 10-year pen while 13 employees were honored for five years service.

UIL ANNOUNCES REALIGNMENT – Wise County schools will find out their districts for 2014-16 at 9 a.m. this morning when the University Interscholastic League announces its biennial realignment. Go to wcmsports.com to get a rundown of the new districts.

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP – The Alzheimer’s (and related dementia) support group for the people who are caring for people with dementia will meet 7 p.m. Thursday in the boardroom at the Wise Regional Health System west campus in Decatur. For more information, call Richard at 940-255-0244.

PARENT CAFE – The Wise Coalition for Healthy Children and the Decatur Public Library will host a Parent Cafe 6-7 p.m. Tuesday. Parent Cafes are small, intimate settings where parents and caregivers discuss their families and parenting challenges, share ideas and learn proven parenting techniques. Children in kindergarten through second grade can attend K2 Play, a monthly play group that includes stories, games and sensory activities, that will take place at the same time at the library. CHAMBER LUNCHEON – Paradise Chamber of Commerce luncheon is noon to 1 p.m. today at City Hall. Lunch, catered by Raymond’s BBQ, is $10 a plate. Speaker is Brenda Rowe, Wise County District Clerk. Raffle prizes are welcome. RSVP deadline was Friday.

MOBILE HEALTH UNIT – Texas Health Wellness for Life will station a mobile health unit 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at 1009 Halsell St. in Bridgeport. Well-woman exams, mammograms and colon cancer screenings will be available. Services are free for those who meet certain criteria. Insurance will also be accepted. FUNERALS – Service for Earl Smith, 75, of Decatur is 11 a.m. today at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur with burial at Pleasant Grove No. 1 Cemetery.

GRAVESIDE service for Bula M. Walker Robinson, 86, of Decatur is 3 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove No. 1 Cemetery. Coker-Hawkins is handling arrangements.

VISITATION for Mary Belcher, 56, of Springtown is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Coker-Hawkins. A memorial will be held at a later date.

SERVICE for Sanford Maynard, 70, of Decatur is pending at Coker-Hawkins.

FUNERAL for Kenneth C. Huebner, 91, of Boyd is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd with burial at Boyd Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

SERVICE for Frances Folger, 79, of Sunset is pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
