CHURCH BURGLARY – Burglars struck the First Baptist Church of Slidell early Friday morning, stealing approximately $35,000 worth of items including a church van and electronic equipment. The van was later recovered off a nearby county road behind some trees. Pastor Bobby Cates said the suspects crawled through a window in the nursery and “ransacked the place.” Cates said it is the first robbery or act of vandalism in the six years he’s been at the church. CANDIDATE FORUM TONIGHT – The Bridgeport Lions Club will host a Primary Election Public Forum at 7 tonight at their building located at 1107 8th St. in Bridgeport. All Republican and Democratic candidates in the March 4 primary election have been invited, and each candidate will present his or her platform or position on the issues affecting Wise County. DECATUR, ALVORD WIN – On a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Makayla Mayfield, Decatur beat Princeton 48-47 Friday to win the area title. Decatur will now play Argyle at 7:30 Tuesday at Saginaw Chisholm Trail. Alvord pounded Howe 63-29. Alvord moves on to play Sunnyvale Tuesday at Frisco Wakeland at 7. In other girls playoff games, Paradise fell to Sunnyvale 49-41. Saltillo beat Slidell 67-39.

BOYS PLAYOFFS START - The Bridgeport Bulls and Slidell Greyhounds start the playoffs tonight. Bridgeport plays Frisco Lone Star at 7 at Denton Ryan. Slidell takes on Dodd City at S&S at 7.

BOYD, DECATUR TO MEET ON DIAMOND – Boyd will play at Decatur at 5 today. Boyd won the Castleberry Tournament over the weekend.

CLOSED FOR PRESIDENT’S DAY – All Wise County government offices will be closed today in observance of President’s Day. The Wise County Development Services and the Decatur dumpsite will also be closed today. The Boyd, Chico and Cottondale dumpsites will closed the next business day, Wednesday. Wise County Animal Shelter will be closed Tuesday in observance of Presidents Day. The shelter reopens 8 a.m. Wednesday.

QUILTING WORKSHOP – The Alvord Public Library is sponsoring a come and go Quilting Workshop at the Alvord City Hall Conference Room 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. The program will be presented by prize winning quilter Jo Ellen Brown, who is currently president of the Wise County Quilt Guild. She will present demonstrations including piecing techniques, effective use of quilting tools, binding techniques and more. Bring your quilting projects to “Show and Tell.” Tips and techniques for beginners and advanced quilters will be presented.

DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP – Wise Regional Health System, the Wise and Montague County Medical Society and Renew Home Health will host a Diabetes Support Group 6:30 tonight in the Education Room of the hospital in Decatur. Dr. Brad Faglie and Freda Kelley, RN, will host a question-and-answer session on the trials and triumphs of living with diabetes and plans of action. Diabetes, the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S., affects more than 10 percent of Wise County’s population. If you have diabetes or know someone with diabetes, you are encouraged to come. If it’s your first meeting, come at 6:15 to meet Dr. Faglie and get an introduction to the basics.

DEMOCRATIC PARTY MEETING - The Wise County Democratic Party has rescheduled it’s monthly meeting. The Party will meet at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Wise County Law Enforcement Center located at 200 Rook Ramsey Dr. in Decatur. All election judges for the WCDP Primary are asked to attend to discuss important election day procedures. The Wise County Democratic Candidates will be at the candidate forum hosted by the Bridgeport Lions Club at 7 tonight.

SOCIETY MEETING – The Wise County Fossil, Rock, and Mineral Society will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church of Decatur Wesley Center, 201 E. Main. The Society meets for the purpose of promoting the study of earth sciences and fossil and rock exploration. Visitors are welcome to attend the meetings on the third Tuesday of each month.

JOIN THE CLUB – The Oil Belt Senior Men’s Golf Association opens its 2014 season today at The Club at Runaway Bay. Men 50 years of age or older are invited to join the association, which is beginning its 23rd year. Enrollment fee is $20, and play is by handicap. Members play two to four times per month, rotating play on 17 different courses in the area. There is a nominal fee each time you play. For information, call J.E. Carson at 940-627-2244.

COLLEGE/CAREER MEETING – Decatur High School will conduct a Junior Parent College/Career Informational Meeting at 6 tonight in the second floor lecture hall. Senior parents are also welcome to attend.

RELAY FOR LIFE – The Relay For Life of Wise County team captain’s meeting is 7:30 tonight at Candlewood Suites in Decatur.

BEEF RAFFLE – Decatur FFA Alumni Association is having a raffle for half a side of Wise County raised and hormone free beef, and standard processing will be provided for two winners. Drawing will be held at the Wise County Youth Fair. Tickets are $10 each or three for $25. You can get them from any alumni member or at the following locations: AgVantage, Sam’s Hairquarters, LK Insurance-Lonny Drew’s office or James Wood Motors-new car showroom. SERVICE for Barbara Paul, 72, of Springtown is pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.

FUNERAL for Byrl Dee “Butch” Proctor, 82, of Boyd is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel with burial at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at DFW National Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

FUNERAL for Dr. Charles L. Renshaw, 78, of Decatur will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Chapel Church in Fort Worth. Greenwood Funeral Home in Fort Worth is handling arrangements.
