BRIDGEPORT, BOYD MEET ON GRIDIRON – The Bridgeport Bulls will head across Wise County tonight to take on the Boyd Yellowjackets in the second game of the season for both football squads. Alvord will play host to Grapevine Faith. Paradise entertains Henrietta at home.

DECATUR, NORTHWEST TO PLAY SATURDAY – The Decatur Eagles and Northwest Texans will wait an extra day to take the field. The Eagles will take part in the Dale Hansen Football Classic Saturday, playing Alvarado at 3 p.m. at Stuart B. Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie. Follow our live blog of the game at www.wcmessenger.com/scores. Northwest will play Prosper at AT&T Stadium at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Southwest Showcase.

COUNTY PUBLIC HEARINGS – Although no one attended the set of public hearings earlier this week, round two is tonight. Wise County commissioners will have a public hearing on the proposed tax rate at 6 p.m. in the third-floor conference room of the courthouse in Decatur. A public hearing on the county’s branch campus maintenance tax will follow at 6:30. Commissioners have proposed a $69.8 million budget and a tax rate of 37.89 cents per $100 property valuation. The proposed rate for the branch campus maintenance tax is 4.618 cents per $100 valuation. Commissioners have a special meeting 9 a.m. Monday to adopt the tax rates and approve the budget for fiscal year 2015.

VOLLEYBALL RESULTS – Boyd and Paradise each went 2-2 on the first day of the Buckle Up For Lane’s Sake Tournament in Nocona. Chico finished 1-3, falling to Sanger 25-6, 25-13, Bells 25-14, 25-19, and Windthorst 25-15, 25-18. Chico topped Jacksboro 25-22, 15-25, 26-24.

LADY EAGLES HEAD TO CHISHOLM TRAIL – The Decatur Lady Eagles return to the volleyball court at 5:30 this afternoon at Chisholm Trail in Fort Worth. The Bridgeport Sissies will play Mineral Wells at 5 p.m. Northwest plays DeSoto at home at 6:30 p.m. Boyd, Chico and Paradise will play at the Buckle Up for Lane’s Sake Tournament in Nocona Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HEAD TO SOUTHLAKE INVITE – The Decatur, Northwest and Boyd cross country teams will run at the Southlake Carroll Invitational Saturday morning at Meadowmere Park in Grapevine. Paradise teams start their season today at Keene. Alvord will run at Keller Fossil Ridge.

CHICO CHAMBER – The Chico Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly meeting 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Senior Citizens Building on the west side of the Chico square. Members will discuss the upcoming October Fest. Lunch will follow at noon, and there is no speaker.

PARKINSON’S SUPPORT – A support group for those afflicted by Parkinson’s disease will meet 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Bridgeport Public Library. The group is open to those who suffer from the disease and their caregivers.

COOKIES AND CURRICULUM – Cookies and Curriculum Night at Prairie View Elementary is 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9. Cookies will be served, and teachers and PVE staff will talk about the 2014-2015 school year. The book fair will be open at 5:30 p.m. and remain open throughout the event.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Anyone interested in community service, or an opportunity to help others, is invited to join Wise County Special Needs Baseball 8:30-noon each Saturday Sept. 13-Nov. 1. ESL CLASSES – ESL classes, sponsored by First Baptist Church in Decatur, will begin Wednesday, Sept. 10. Classes will be held at 6:30 p.m. There are 4 levels of classes – primary, beginning, intermediate and advanced. New students will need to register, however returning students do not need to register. Call First Baptist Church, 940-627-3235.

DHS MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT – Parents of Decatur High School students are invited to Meet the Teacher night 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8. Schedules will be available.

PARADE ENTRIES SOUGHT – The Decatur High School homecoming parade is 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 in downtown Decatur. This year’s theme is “fandoms,” representing something that has a fan following. Entry forms can be found on the DHS website.

VETERANS BREAKFAST – The Wise County Veterans Group will hold its weekly breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Decatur Civic Center. All Wise County veterans are invited.

OFFICE CLOSING – The Veteran Service Office will be closed Sept. 8-12 for semi-annual training. The office will reopen at 8 a.m. Sept. 15.

FUNERAL – Sara “Shorty” Howard, 90, of Alvord is pending at Coker-Hawkins.
