HOUSE FIRE KILLS 1, BELIEVED TO BE TEEN – Investigators believe the remains found in a fire early Thursday morning in Chico are Christopher Conn, an 8th grade student at Chico Middle School. Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard confirmed at 11:30 a.m. Thursday that a body was recovered from the Chico home that burned earlier in the day. The fire started about 4 a.m. Beard said he presumed it’s the body of 14-year-old Conn, who was believed to be trapped inside when the fire consumed the home located in the 200 block of County Road 1637 near Lake Bridgeport’s Wise County Park, but he’s awaiting confirmation from the Dallas County Medical Examiner. The boy’s stepfather, Johnny Hothouse, was originally taken to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur but was later transported to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. He suffered second and third degree burns to his arms, neck and face and suffered from smoke inhalation as he tried to rescue Conn from the burning home. The boy’s mother, Kimberly Wrisner, and little brother, Diesel Hothouse, 2, were also transported from the scene to WRHS but were released before noon. Beard said the fire is still under investigation, but it appears to be accidental. They think the fire started in the victim’s room. Counselors were on hand at Chico Middle School yesterday to talk to fellow students. The Hothouse family lost everything in the fire and does not have insurance on the home. Red Cross was contacted to help the family.
