SWAP MEET BEGINS – The 37th Annual Wise County Swap Meet officially began this morning. It runs 6 a.m.-6 p.m. today through Sunday at Wise County Fairgrounds located at 3100 Farm Road 51 South in Decatur. It’s free and open to the public. The three-day event typically features more than 3,000 vendors. The weather should be perfect for the event with high temperatures in the upper 60s and 70s.
2 CONFIRMED DEAD IN ALVORD FIRE – Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard said the bodies of a male and a female were recovered from the debris of a travel trailer that burned early Thursday morning north of Alvord. Their remains have been sent to the Dallas County Medical Examiner for identification. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Departments from Alvord, Chico, Sunset and Decatur were dispatched to the 200 block of County Road 1695 at 12:49 a.m. The first units on scene reported a travel trailer fully engulfed and flames through the back part of a single-wide mobile home. Officials believe the fire started in the travel trailer and spread to the mobile home. The occupant of the mobile home, who is wheelchair-bound, was rescued by neighbors and suffered no serious injuries, according to Beard.
EARLY VOTING – Another 160 people voted early in the March 4 primary elections yesterday, bringing the three-day total to 506. Early voting continues today at three locations in Wise County: Decatur City Hall, the Bridgeport Law Enforcement Center and Rhome City Hall. The Decatur Wal-Mart, 800 S. U.S. 81/287, will also host early voting 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.
POLITICAL LETTER DEADLINE – The deadline to submit a letter to the editor endorsing or commenting on candidates running in the March 4 primary election is 2 p.m. today. They will run in the Saturday, Feb. 22, edition. Any letters submitted after this deadline will not run in the paper.
HIGH FIRE DANGER – While Wise County is not under a red flag warning today, we remain in a high fire danger area due to windy conditions and low humidities, according to the National Weather Service.
UNITED WAY SUCCESS – Mike McQuiston of Wise Regional Health System was elected the new president of the Wise County United Way at the organization’s annual meeting Thursday at the Decatur Civic Center. Executive Director Martin Woodruff said that $410,000 had been raised during the campaign to support 29 health and human service agencies in Wise County. Woodruff said that he was optimistic the goal of $450,000 would be reached before the campaign is over. Platinum donor level honors went to Devon Energy Corporation, its employees and suppliers who gave $236,000 to the campaign.
BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS CONTINUE – The Decatur Eagles and Slidell Greyhounds return to action tonight with area round playoff games. ROWDEN SWIMS AT STATE – Decatur junior Katey Rowden will swim today in the 4A prelims at the University Interscholastic League State Swimming and Diving Meet at the University of Texas in Austin. Rowden will compete in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. The finals will be held Saturday.
FAMILY FUNDRAISER – A fundraiser benefiting the family of Chris Conn is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Chico Mart. There will be a bake sale and raffle. Conn was killed in a house fire in Chico Feb. 6.
RELAY BENEFIT – Casilla’s in Bridgeport will donate 10 percent of all proceeds 6 p.m. to close tonight to the Walkers For Tomorrow Relay For Life team.
BENEFIT TALENT SHOW – Decatur High School Talent Show and Silent Auction is 6:30 tonight in the Decatur High School Theater. Admission is a $5 minimum donation. All proceeds will go to the family of a Decatur high school and middle school student who recently lost their home to a fire.
PATRIOTIC RALLY – Overpasses for America – Wise County will host its 10th Patriot Wave 1-4 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 81/287 and Farm Road 407 in New Fairview. This patriotic rally will be held in honor of George Washington’s birthday.
