KICKING OFF THE SEASON – Most Wise County schools will start the football season tonight at 7:30. Decatur will head to Springtown. Bridgeport will play host to Mineral Wells. Nocona heads to Alvord. Paradise takes on Red Oak Life at Ferris. Boyd will open at Gunter. Northwest plays host to Corsicana. Keep up with the action at www.wcmessenger.com/scores. RAINY START – A line of storms swept through Wise County this morning, bringing much needed rain. Rainfall totals included 1.9 inches in Greenwood, 1.7 in Alvord, 1.3 in Paradise, 1.25 in Bridgeport, 1.1 in Cottondale, 0.98 in Decatur and 0.89 in Rhome. The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of rain today and a 40 percent chance of rain tonight.

ANOTHER TOUGH TOURNEY – The Decatur Lady Eagles volleyball team continues its tough slate to start the season today at the PSA Lone Star Circle of Champions Tournament. The Lady Eagles play Allen, Prosper and Sachse in pool play. In other action, Boyd plays Forestburg at home at 4:30 p.m. Chico takes on Prairie Valley at home at 5 p.m. Bridgeport will head to Trimble Tech. Paradise plays Poolville. Northwest will compete in the Arlington Tournament.

SMITH RECEPTION – The City of Decatur will hold a reception for Earl Smith 2-4 p.m. today at the Decatur Civic Center. Smith has served as the city’s public works director and city engineer for nearly eight years, and he is leaving to become director of engineering for League City.

BENEFIT – A bean and cornbread supper will be held Saturday as a benefit for Preston Younger of Chico. Younger is in need of surgery to remove a mass on his kidney. The meal will begin at 6 p.m. at Chico City Hall followed by music by the Buckner Band and a cake auction. Meal includes dessert, tea or water. Donations will be accepted as price of the meal. You can also donate to the “Preston Younger Benefit” account at Legend Bank. Call Jan Buckner, 940-644-2624.

QUARTER AUCTION – A Quarter Auction benefiting the Springtown Public Library is Tuesday, Sept. 2. Doors open at 6 p.m., and auction begins at 6:30 at the Senior Citizen’s Center, 1070 N. Main (FM 51). You must be at least 18 to attend.

HOLIDAY CLOSINGS – All Wise County administrative offices will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day. Wise County Development Services and the Decatur dumpsite will also be closed Monday. The Boyd, Chico and Cottondale dumpsites will be closed the next business day, Wednesday Sept. 3.

COUNTY PUBLIC HEARINGS – Wise County commissioners will have a public hearing on the proposed tax rate at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in the third-floor conference room of the courthouse in Decatur. They will hold a second public hearing at the same location 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5. Commissioners have proposed a $69.8 million budget and a tax rate of 37.89 cents per $100 property valuation.

BOOTHS AND SPONSORSHIPS – Various levels of sponsorship are available for the Decatur Junior Woman’s Club 2nd Annual City on a Hill Color Run and Fun Run. They include platinum for $250, business name on event T-shirt and sponsorship banner; gold for $100, business name on gold level of banner; silver for $50, business name on silver level of banner. Sponsors are also welcome to submit items for goodie bags distributed to every participant. There will also be booth space available at the event for $50. Contact Amy Wilson at 817-841-4471.

PARK SPRINGS REUNION – The Park Springs Homecoming and Reunion is Sunday at the Victory Baptist Church Fellowship Hall at 4346 N. Texas 101 in Park Springs.

VETERANS BREAKFAST – The Wise County Veterans Group will hold its weekly breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Stevens Street Grill in Bridgeport. All Wise and surrounding county veterans are invited.

HAPPY LABOR DAY – There will be no Update on Monday due to the Labor Day Holiday. Any breaking news over the holiday weekend will be posted at WCMessenger.com.

FUNERALS – A private memorial service for Vanessa Pearce, 49, of Chico will be held at a later date. Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Doralee Inez Hutchison, 88, of Springtown is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Boyd with burial at Pleasant Grove No. 2 Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
